The adsorption characteristics of bentonite were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and infrared absorption spectroscopy. The effect of parameters (i.e, adsorption time and initial pH value of the aqueous solution) on the adsorption performance by bentonite was investigated. The isotherm data are fairly represented by the Freundlich model. The results show that bentonite can adsorb glucose in aqueous solution, and the glucose can be intercalated into the montmorillonite as the main component of bentonite. Moreover, the adsorption capability and the efficiency of bentonite increase with increasing the initial pH value of the aqueous solution. ©, 2014, Chinese Ceramic Society. All right reserved.

Since modern architectural technology has set a new standard for toughness of mortar, expensive polymer admixture has been used to modify dry-mixed mortar currently. But high cost critically restricted popularization of dry-mixed mortar. A new expanded Perlite powder-redispersible Polymer powder Compound dry-mixed mortar Admixture (PPCA) was researched in this paper. The research has indicated that PPCA showed synergistically optimized effect. There was the best modification effect when expanded perlite powder/redispersible polymer powder rate was 2 and admixture/cement rate was 0.15. The Ratio of Compressive strength to Flexural strength (RCF) declined to less than 3 when compressive strength of mortar staying above 10MPa. Moreover, cost of this compound admixture only was 1/3 of redispersible polymer powder admixture of the same performance. Meanwhile, this PPCA can improve water retention and increase softening coefficient of mortar to above 1. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In this study, the interaction between glucose and raw bentonite is investigated aiming towards the preparation of a new type of water-retentive admixture for cement-based mortar. A series of laboratory experiments is designed and analysis of the results shows that glucose is indeed intercalated into the bentonite, which implies that a new kind of complex admixture (glucose-bentonite, G-Ben) has been prepared; the mechanism is analysed by X-ray diffraction and infra-red absorption spectra. The effect of G-Ben on both water retention and compressive strength of mortar is studied. The experimental results show that in the glucose mass ratio region of 4-7%, the water retention value obtained is higher than 94%, with no decline in the compressive strength of mortar cured for 28 d. Results confirm that the retardation of glucose is definitely inhibited while glucose plays its role in water-retaining. The findings in this study will be useful for the preparation of a low-cost admixture to take the place of expensive cellulose ethers.

In recent years, many buildings went up in flames one after another. It is thought-provoking. So the fire-proof property should be considered into one of the most important performance of the building thermal insulation materials. As a result, the study on the expanded perlite lightweight porous inorganic material heated up fast although its application still has some problems to be solved. In this paper, we take the expanded perlite as raw material to make thermal insulation board, and then study on the effect of volume weight on the coefficient of thermal conductivity and tensile strength. What is more important, we find that a new binding agent of Na2O-B 2O3-SiO2 syetem sol contributes to improving its water resistance. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
