An end turn portion (12a) of a coil spring (12) includes a first portion (12a_(1)), a second portion (12a_(2)), and a third portion (12a_(3)). The first portion (12a_(1)) is always in contact with a spring seat irrespective of the magnitude of a load applied to the coil spring (12). The second portion (12a_(2)) contacts the spring seat when the load applied to the coil spring (12) is large, and is separated from the spring seat when the load is small. The third portion (12a_(3)) is always separated from the spring seat irrespective of the magnitude of the load. An insulating sheet (50) made of a material having rubber elasticity is attached to a lower surface of a wire (40) at the end turn portion (12a) by means of adhesive bonding. The insulating sheet (50) is provided on a lower surface of a region including at least the second portion (12a_(2)).

A compressive residual stress portion (50) having a compressive residual stress from a surface of a wire (40) to a first depth (D1) is formed between end turn portions (12a, 12b) of a coil spring (12). The end turn portion (12a) includes a first portion (12a_(1)), a second portion (12a_(2)), and a third portion (12a_(3)). The first portion (12a_(1)) is always in contact with a spring seat irrespective of a load applied to the coil spring (12). The second portion (12a_(2)) contacts the spring seat when the load applied to the coil spring (12) is large, and is separated from the spring seat when the load is small. The third portion (12a_(3)) is always separated from the spring seat irrespective of the magnitude of the load. In the end turn portion (12a), in a region including the second portion (12a_(2)), a deep residual stress portion (51) is formed by ultrasonic shot peening. The deep residual stress portion (51) has a compressive residual stress from a surface of the wire (40) to a second depth (D2) deeper than the first depth (D1).


A steel has a predetermined chemical composition with a balance being Fe and incidental impurities, wherein a sum of Cu content and Ni content is 0.15 mass% or more, and a crystal grain size after forming into a stabilizer shape and quenching is in a range of 7.5 to 10.5 in prior austenite crystal grain size number. Thus, a highly durable stabilizer steel that has a tensile strength of 1200 MPa or more and excellent normal-temperature and low-temperature toughness and is used in an environmentally friendly manufacturing process at lower cost can be realized.

A leaf spring device (1) includes a main leaf (20) made of a steel plate including an elastic section (20b) configured to generate elastic force when bent; and an eye section (20a) formed in an end portion of the elastic section (20b), the elastic section (20b) and the eye section (20a) being tempered. There is also provided a method for manufacturing the leaf spring device (1). The eye section (20a) is formed by rolling the end of the elastic section (20b) into a circular form. The eye section (20a) is tempered at a higher temperature than the elastic section (20b).
