Free-form optical elements are used in modern design of electro-optic systems to reduce the structural complexity and to minimize the effect of geometrical aberrations. Such elements require very accurate placement during assembly and thus need a physically well-defined reference frame. In the presented Head-Up Display system, a free-form combiner lacks any physical frame and is therefore attached to a mechanical mount. In order to allow accurate assembly, the transformation between the combiner's manufacturing frame and a frame attached to the physical mount must be known to the designer. In this paper an optimal estimation method to compute the required transformation is proposed that utilizes multiple measurements of the combiner glass surface obtained from a coordinate-measuring machine.

Sensor fusion is a well researched subject exhibiting numerous works published and various methods proposed to provide an optimal solution. This paper deals with the special case of fusing data from multiple inertial sensors in a navigation system, all sharing a common external update sensor. Such examples can be found in practice where a plurality of sensors is packed together in order to improve statistical parameters of the system. An optimal fusion scheme is developed and its properties are discussed. In particular, the present work emphasizes the importance of the correlation between different local estimates due to the common additional data source. This correlation must be taken into account especially when alternative federated fusion schemes, more attractive from the practical implementation point of view, e.g., to facilitate fault-tolerant operation, are considered.
