In this paper, a starch-sodium silicate compound system was employed as a surface sizing agent to improve the strength of corrugating medium. The viscosity of the compound system and the impact of the system on ring-crush strength and bursting strength of corrugating medium were studied, and Cobb value was used to characterize the waterproof performance of the surface sized paper. Compared with conventional surface sizing agents, a higher sizing load could be realized by using the compound system and therefore a much higher stiffness of paper could be achieved. The ring-crush and bursting strength of corrugating medium were increased by up to 80% and 51% respectively. Source

With the rapid development of the packaging industry, the requirements for physical properties of corrugated paperboard tend to become higher and higher, especially for the strength properties. A water glass-starch compound system was employed as a surface sizing agent to improve the strength of linerboard in this work. The viscosity of water glassstarch compound system, and its impacts on ring-crush strength and bursting strength of linerboard were evaluated. Cobb value and contact angle were used to characterize the waterproof performance of paper after surface sizing. Compared with conventional surface sizing agents, water glass-starch compound system overcame the defects of low coating weight and inadequate stiffness of the sizing layer, allowing ringcrush strength and bursting strength of linerboard to increase by 91% and 50%, respectively. Additionally, the compound system had higher solids content, low viscosity, and good film-forming ability, which will bring a lot of convenience to production. Source

Sodium silicate was solidified with PA and was coated on corrugating paper as a surface sizing agent to improve ring crush and burst strength of corrugating paper. The effect of the compound sizing agent on the main strength indexes of the paper was studied. The water resistance of the sized corrugating paper was characterized by Cobb value and the mechanism of surface water-resisting property was analyzed. Compared with conventional surface sizing agents, the compound sizing agent which has a higher solid content, lower viscosity, coating content is easily controlled and coated paper has higher stiffness. The results indicated that burst index and ring crush of the coated corrugating paper was increased by 35% and 2.2 times, respectively. Source
