Two new briarane-type diterpenoids, fragilides H (1) and I (2), along with a known metabolite, (+)-11β, 20β- epoxyjunceellolide D (3), were isolated from the sea whip gorgonian coral Junceella fragilis. The structures of briaranes 1-3 were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by comparison with the spectral data from other known metabolites featuring a briarane carbon skeleton. © 2010 The Chemical Society of Japan. A novel clovane-related derivative, rumphellclovane A (1), which was found to possess a new carbon skeleton, and a new natural clovane, 2β-hydroxyclovan-9-one (2), were isolated from the gorgonian coral Rumphella antipathies. The structures of metabolites 1 and 2 were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis and by comparison of the spectral data with those of related clovane analogues. Chemical investigations on the cultured octocoral Briareum excavatum have led to the isolation of five new 8,17-epoxybriarane diterpenoids, excavatoids GK (15). The structures of briaranes 15 were determined on the basis of spectroscopic methods and the structure of 1 was further confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Cytotoxicity of these metabolites toward various tumor cell lines is described. Excavatoid I (3) was found to show mild inhibitory effects on elastase release and superoxide anion generation by human neutrophils. © 2010 The Chemical Society of Japan. Source

This distribution and variation of 45 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the waters of Kenting coral reefs were investigated by using sensitive research-grade sampling and analytical methods. The concentration levels of total PAHs (including particulate and dissolved PAHs) in the Kenting waters were relatively low, ranging from 2.2 to 34.4 ng/L. There was no significant spatial difference in PAH concentrations among the sampling stations, even between the surface and bottom waters. The fraction of dissolved PAHs on average was greater than that of particulate PAHs due to the small amount of total suspended particles. The partition coefficients between the particulate and dissolved phase (log K oc) were positively correlated with their log K ow values (r 2 = 0.67, n = 80), except for the more hydrophobic PAHs with log K ow values greater than 5.91. Results of principal component analysis indicate that the patterns of particulate PAH compositions were similar through the Kenting waters in the fall and winter, whereas there was a significant spatial difference between the spring and summer samples, which might be affected by a combination of land runoff and coastal currents. PAHs along the Kenting coasts were dominated by low-molecular PAHs, which have higher solubility than high-molecular PAHs. Based on isomer ratios, analysis of the source of PAHs in the Kenting coastal waters demonstrated that the PAHs come mostly from petroleum and, to a lesser degree, from combustion. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC. Three new 12-hydroxybriarane diterpenoids, excavatoids L-N (1-3), have been isolated from the cultured octocoral Briareum excavatum. The structures of new briaranes 1-3 were elucidated by the interpretations of spectroscopic methods.
