The execution of workflow oriented applications for eScience should be based on efficient solutions for available resource monitoring and scheduling by revising the allocation solution at the task level based on requirements of subsequent tasks. The PEGAF project aims at providing a platform for workflow oriented applications development and execution, implementing adaptive scheduling strategies. After a short presentation of the PEGAF platform architecture and functionality, the paper describes the specificity of the workflow execution in a Grid environment and the adopted implementation solution for the OGSA compliant service container component as part of PEGAF project. © 2011 IEEE.

There is a pronounced trend of aging of population. The fight against aging is a global, interdisciplinary process, which involves not only various medical branches, but also different research domains and the fast development of modern and adapted technologies and devices. There is an urgent need of a much broader implementation of Information and Communication Technology that aim to facilitate a dignified aging, an independent living and to improve the efficiency and quality of elderly care. The increasing number of medical or non medical information and the changes in the anti-aging domain lead to the necessity to create specialised Health Information Systems (like AgingNice or AGECVD presented in this paper) in which the general public and professionals should be able to find the latest information in the field of anti-aging.

During last years the e-Infrastructure concept has been extensively elaborated and promoted as an essential pillar for the implementation of ERA (European Research Area). The main components of this infrastructure are the network for education and research and the Grid infrastructures. At the European level important efforts and resourced have been devoted to the development of both components, with joint financial support provided by Framework Programmes 6 and 7 of EU and national research programmes. At the national level, in the 2007 Report of the Romanian Committee for Research Infrastructures, the high-speed communication network for education and research, and national grid infrastructure for research were included in the list of proposals for priority investment projects in the Information and Communications Technologies domain. The main financial support for the development of these projects is provided by the Sectorial Operational Programme "Increase of Economic Competitiveness" (SOP IEC). ICI Bucharest is among beneficiary organizations of this support. This paper presents the European context for e-Infrastructure development, the evolution and current status of Grid infrastructures at the European and national levels, a short review of the development of Grid computing at ICI Bucharest, the main objectives and activities of the SOP IEC grant awarded to the institute for a significant upgrade of the current grid site RO-01-ICI.
