A comparative analysis is made on the application results of plate-fin heat exchangers (PFHE) and spiral wound heat exchangers (SWHE), both of which are adaptable to multiple stream heat transfer. It is pointed out that PFHE are better with compact structure and high heat transfer efficiency but with poor reliability and worse performance in impact heat influx and adaptability of offshore floating LNG terminals. In the global trend, the PFHE are applied on a large scale but the SWHE on a small scale. Then, the application of dual-enhanced tubes (GEWA-PB and GEWA-KS) is introduced and the advantages of the once-through seawater cooling system are demonstrated: high reliability, easy maintenance, low electricity consumption, stability in production and high safety. In terms of its life span economy and reliability, titanium is chosen as the preferred dominant refrigerant for the intermediate cooler between a condenser and a compressor. Furthermore, the actual condensing process by use of the mixture refrigerant is introduced, based on that and the mechanical stability, the innovative measures made for the structure of the helical-baffle exchangers adopted by the Hammerfest LNG Plant are also presented herein. In the end, this paper puts forward the following proposals for further studies of heat transfer technology in LNG plants in China. (1) The SWHE-based main cryogenic heat exchanger (MCHE) with the dealing capacity of 1000000 m 3 per day should be studied. (2) Research of heat transfer and flow should be conducted on the high-efficiency condense tubes and evaporating pipes under actual working conditions. (3) A systematic analysis should be made of the impact of direct and indirect cooling methods on an LNG plant and the studies of the adaptability of materials and equipments in the whole plant to sea water should be made as well. (4) The titanium-made tubes with high efficiency should be further studied and in combination with the research of shell-side longitudinal flow and the utilization of high-efficiency heat transfer components, the condenser adopting actual mixture refrigerant with satisfactory thermal performance and mechanical stability should be developed.

Due to its excellent heat transfer property, good adaptability to variable loads and operation reliability, large-scale spiral wound heat exchanger (SWHE) has a bright application prospect in the refinery industry of China. With respect to the large-scale hydrocracking unit, both the new heat transfer process and the SWHE design technology are analyzed. As to the design of heat transfer process, high pressure SWHE instead of traditional thread locking ring heat exchanger (TLRHE) is employed, which reduces the number of reaction furnaces and obtains remarkable energy-economizing effect. As to the design innovation of high pressure SWHE, such contents as the structure style, adaptability of whole structure, requirement of material selection, structure of Ni-base alloy butt weldment, design calculation of main structure, technology requirement of high pressure finish-rolling heat exchange tube and design specification of the minimum center tube etc. are discussed. In China, the large-scale refinery SWHE with area larger than 10000m2 can be produced now, and abundant experience has been accumulated in the design technology. However, there is still a certain gap between our country and the advanced countries in Europe and America in such aspects as the material variety of SWHE, the diversity of heat exchange tube specification, the application of numerical simulation technology in design and the inspection and repair technology of high pressure SWHE etc. © 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd. As heat exchangers are the important parts of the LNG production or transportation units, vaporizers and main cryogenic heat exchangers (MCHE) play important roles either in LNG receiving terminals or LNG plants. A discussion covers the three classic types of vaporizers, i.e., the open-rack vaporizer, intermediate fluid vaporizer, and spiral wound vaporizer; the characteristics of spiral wound heat exchangers and plate-fin heat exchangers as the MCHE; and suggestions for both vaporizers and MCHEs to be hopefully made in China.

A multi-stream spiral wound heat exchanger is one of the most widely used main cryogenic heat exchangers in a basic-load type LNG plant. The calculation methods of the thermal-physical properties of gas and liquid media, including density, dynamic viscosity, heat conductivity, and specific heat capacity, are presented. Results were compared with those computed by the HYSYS software. The calculation error was controlled within the engineering allowance range. Thus, the calculation methods introduced are feasible. It provides technical support for the development of domestic large-scale cold towers and promotes the China-made spiral wound LNG heat exchangers.
