Managed pressure drilling, one of the state-of-the-art technologies in the world, can not only precisely control the bottomhole pressure but effectively solve the universally common problems in the narrow density window drilling. To better master and use this technology, it is deemed as complex-system engineering macroscopically, to ensure that all parts of this system can normally work and each part has a better synergism with each other, thereby to maximize its efficiency. Therefore, this paper first presents the concept of Managed Pressure Drilling System Engineering (MPDSE), a method of study applying the system engineering theory into the MPD technology. The main contents of this study include a precise design of each part of the MPD system, a systematic analysis of the relationships between the parts, and dealing with the inter-restrictions between the parts to optimize the whole system. Then the MPD system study procedures are investigated by use of the meta-synthesis method. And finally the primary design of the basic MPD frame is made. The conclusion points out that it is proper to use the system engineering method to study the MPD technology, and each part in this frame is critical to the success of the MPD system.
