Shape development and closure analysis of surface cracks using the finite element method have been employed by researchers without considering interactions of the two phenomena. This study uses the free-front finite element technique to account for such interactions. Mesh refinement effects on the crack shape development are studied by concluding that the element size ahead of the crack front is not affecting the simulated crack shape. Newman and Raju assumed different Paris equation coefficients for examining the surface crack growth. This assumption is here analysed by applying the crack closure concept using the results of the free-front technique. The results are close to those determined by employing the above assumption for the equation coefficients. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new generation of eye trackers shows us a promising alternative approach to tracing decision processes beyond the popular computerized-information-board approach. In order to exploit the eye-movement data, this study examined the validity of the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm (NWA) to characterize the decision process, and proposed an NWA-based classification method to predict which typical strategy an empirical search behavior might belong to. An eye-tracking based experiment was conducted. Our results showed that the resemblance score by NWA conformed to the assumption that the pair of information search behaviors based on the same strategy should have the closest resemblance. Moreover, with respect to our NWA-based classification method, our result showed that its overall prediction accuracy, hit-ratio, in identifying underlying strategies achieved 88%, significantly much higher than that gained from chance. On the whole, the combination of eye-fixation data and our NWA-based classification method is qualified. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

To date, predictions of cracking torque have been empirical. A recently proposed rational model, the Softened Membrane Model for Torsion (SMMT), can predict the entire torque-twist curve, including the cracking point. In the SMMT, however, the cracking point has to be determined via a complicated iterative solution algorithm. This paper presents a step-by-step simplification of the SMMT and proposes a set of simple formulas for direct calculation of both cracking torque and twist. The formulas are validated with tests of 93 torsional specimens and compared with three other empirical formulas. It is shown that the proposed formulas are not only simple enough to be used for design purposes, but are also capable of producing more rational and accurate predictions than other empirical formulas. © 2010, American Concrete Institute. In 2010, Fan et al. proposed an efficient anonymous multi-receiver identity-based encryption scheme. This scheme allows a sender to send an encrypted message to a set of designated receivers while preserving receiver anonymity. The scheme is highly efficient for each receiver as it requires only two pairing operations. However, we found that the scheme failed to protect receiver anonymity and the security notation for receiver anonymity captures only semantics in the case of a single receiver, but does not for multiple recipients. In this paper, we present the weaknesses and propose an improved scheme. The improved scheme enhances both security and computational performance. © 2011 The Author. Polygons: Circulenes were easily prepared by Pd-catalyzed annulations of tetraiodotetraphenylenes with alkynes. Their saddle-shaped structure with an radialene character was identified by X-ray crystallography. Similar to 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene, they have a tub-shaped eight-membered ring, but all of the bond lengths and bond angles are almost equal.
