Converter valve surge arrester is one of the key overvoltage protection devices for ±800 kV UHVDC converter station and its technology research and product development is an important task to realize the localization of UHVDC equipment. Based on the introduction of operating principle of dual 12 pulse converter valves, the steady-state stress and the transient stress of converter valve arresters are analyzed. The rules to develop the main technical parameters of valve arresters are proposed. The key technologies of ±800 kV UHVDC converter valve surge arresters are deeply studied with Xiangjiaba-Shanghai UHVDC project. Finally the author points out that: to choose the appropriate chargeability and thermal structure is the key technical problem when complete design of valve surge arrester must be considered. The paper also puts forward a column parallel resistance more technology, can provide arrester with high specific energy absorption capacity of technical support. ©, 2015, Xi'an High Voltage Apparatus Research Institute. Operating condition of a metal-oxide varistor (MOV) is analyzed considering the operating principle of series capacitor bank. The characteristics of the MOVs in the series capacitor banks for TCSC and FSC are compared, and the overvoltage protection of MOV and control measures are discussed. The key technologies for design of MOV are described, including protection level, energy withstand, power-frequency voltage stability, current distribution, and special release ability of short circuit current. According to the requirements in a bids invitation for compensation project of a 500 kV AC power system, two kinds of MOV structures with composite shield and porcelain shield were designed, and the products have passed the type test in the China Electric Power Research Institute, indicating that they meet the engineering requirement.

Pole bus metal oxide surge arrester is one of the key overvoltage protection devices for ±800 kV UHVDC converter station. Its technology research and product development is an important task to realize the nationalization of UHVDC equipment. Based on Hami-Zhengzhou UHVDC project in China, the authors make the studies of the key technologies of pole bus metal oxide surge arrester for ±800 kV UHVDC converter station. It is included: (1) large diameter DC metal oxide varistor technology; (2) polymer housing technology; (3)technology of multi-column varistors in parallel and (4) suspension installation technology. With all the type tests done, the products are applied successfully in Zhengzhou converter station of ±800 kV UHVDC project. All of the type testing items are passed and the product is successfully applied in ±800 kV UHVDC Hami-Zhengzhou engineering, which is the first pole bus metal oxide surge arrester in China for UHVDC converter station. © 2016, Xi'an High Voltage Apparatus Research Institute Co., Ltd.
