A filtrate reducer was synthesized by using Span80 and Tween80 as the emulsifiers, styrene sulfonic acid sodium (SSS), acrylic acid (AA), and acrylic amide (AM) as comonomers, cyclohexane as the oil phase, (NH4)2S2O8 and NaHSO3 as the initiator with inverse microemulsion polymerization. The composition of the copolymer was characterized by infrared spectra, and the thermal stability was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. The mud properties of copolymer drilling fluid were evaluated by rotational viscometer, filter press and scanning electron microscope. The experimental results show that SSS/AA/AM copolymer has good capacities of reducing filtrate loss, heat resistance, salt tolerance and anti-pollution of Ca2+ and Mg2+.
