The isothermal section at 370 °C of the Zn-Al-Ti ternary system in the Zn-rich region was investigated experimentally using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The experimental results reveal that T + TiZn16 + TiZn8 T + TiZn16+ g-Zn, T + TiZn TiZn8, TiZn + TiZn3 + TiZn8, T + g-Zn + (α-Al), T + (a-Al) + TiAl3 and T + TiAl3 + TiAl2 are the seven three-phase equilibria in the Zn-Al-Ti system. T phase is a true ternary phase and it is in equilibrium with TiAl3 a-Al, g-Zn, TiZn, TiZn 8and TiZn16 at 370 °C, respectively. The content of Zn in T phase varies from 12.8 to 56.8 at.%, Al varies from 17.7 to 59.5 at.% and Ti varies from 24.2 to 27.8 at.%. ε-Phase-reinforced ZnAl4Y matrix composite has been fabricated by mixed solid-liquid casting method. The results show that the size of primary η-Zn phase in the composite decreases remarkably with the increase of adding amount of Cu-10wt.%Al powders till it reaches 6.0 wt.% in ZnAl4Y alloy. Besides, a large amount of small ε-phase particles form in ZnAl4Y matrix when the adding amount of Cu-10wt.%Al powders is in the range of 4.0-6.0 wt.% in ZnAl4Y alloy. Coarse ε-phase particles forms when the adding amount of Cu-10wt.%Al powders exceeds 8.0 wt.% in ZnAl4Y alloy. Compared with ZnAl4Y alloy, the composite could obtain optimal mechanical properties when the added amount of Cu-10wt.%Al powders is 6.0 wt.%. © 2013 ASM International. Source

This study was undertaken to investigate the modification effect of Al-30Zn-5Zr-1B master alloy on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ZnAl4Y alloy. The results show that with the addition of Al-30Zn-5Zr-1B master alloy to ZnAl4Y alloy, the morphology and the kind of primary phase vary considerably. Besides, the mechanical properties of the modified alloy can be improved remarkably. When the added amount of Al-30Zn-5Zr-1B master alloy is 1.3 wt.%, the tensile strength, hardness, elongation and impact toughness of the modified alloy increase by 22.3%, 17.6%, 28.8% and 694%, respectively. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.
