By coupling Higbie gas-liquid mass transfer model, Euler three-dimensional transient gas-liquid flow model was established for a six impeller self-inducing reactor with gas distributor. The model was used to simulate the flow field, gas holdup, gas-inducing rate and dissolved oxygen transfer of the gas-liquid mixing process with CFX software. The flow characteristics of the reactor, gas-liquid dispersion performance, gas induction and gas-liquid mass transfer properties were obtained. The analysis on flow pattern characteristics and dissolved oxygen transfer performance at horizontal and vertical positions of the reactor were made, comparing and analyzing the prediction of gas holdup and gas-inducing rate based on experimental data and empirical correlations. Six impeller rotor and gas distributor could obtain uniform gas-liquid mixing. Deviations of gas hold-up and gas-inducing rate predictions from experimental values were 5.2% and 17.6% respectively. Dissolved oxygen transfer and mixing performance near the wall at the bottom of the reactor was bad. ©, 2014, Chemical Industry Press. All right reserved. Source

According to many kinds of methods to measure the volumetric mass transfer coefficients KLa of bioreactor, the procedure of measuring volumetric mass transfer coefficients was separated into two parts, i.e. preparing anaerobic system and measuring dissolved oxygen, and an improved sulfite oxidation method was proposed. Four methods were obtained from different parts to measure KLa of 300 L gas-inducing reactor in different conditions. The influence of different methods was analyzed. The results show that the method of optical isolated oxygen sensor-N2 exhausting is featured by higher accuracy, fast speed and ease of use. The improved sulfite oxidation method has a higher accuracy and can reduce the expense of experiment. Source

Due to the unsatisfactory mass transfer effects and charging coefficient of the yeast airlift reactor, the renovation program is put forward. CFD is used to simulate the mass transfer process before and after renovation. The simulation results show that adding inner devices (sieves) to the riser of an internal-loop airlift reactor can promote the bubbles dispersion, improve the mixing process of gas-liquid mixture and enhance the oxygen transfer effectively. After renovation, the gas holdup decreases. The charging coefficient increases obviously. The yield of biomass is improved. Source
