The purpose of this study is to reveal the residential environment of temporary housing for disaster victims and propose supporting measures, taking a practical approach to temporary housing for victims of two disasters, the 7.13 flood and the Chuetsu earthquake, both of which occurred in 2004 in Chuetsu, the middle area of Niigata Prefecture in Japan. By means of on-site investigation and a "temporary open café" project providing practical support for residents in temporary housing, this study arrived at the following conclusions. (1) Knowledge of how to improve temporary residential units was shared with neighbors, but it was not spread among the temporary sites. (2) The communities in temporary housing were based on former neighborhood communities. It was useful that people who used to be neighbors were housed at the same temporary site and a common room was built at each temporary site. (3) The community in temporary housing was exclusive. However, in the second stage of recovery, the temporary cafés became useful as places where residents could escape the bonds of these communities. (4) During the one and half years after the earthquake, special places providing opportunities for communication and refreshment were produced by residents in the temporary sites.

The Fujimaki's main house was built about the 18th century. This house uses principal rafter with cantilever at main part. There was similar instance at the Ohkubo's main house and the Satoh's main house in Niigata prefecture. This method can be considered a technology that was seen until the mid-19th century in the region.

We confirmed nailed heigushi at the ridge pole both ends. When roof was over, most of heigushi nailed again in a hut bunch near gable, but several heigushi were nailed at outside gable.

The ground plan of Ozashiki, Butuma and Maezashiki covered with tamami of the former Hoshino's main house was performed by inner legislation system, and the dimension value between the pillar conversed by inter columniation system was written down to the member. Span direction of Tyanoma taken the inter columniation system, on ridge direction, it performed by inner legislation system at entrance southward, but performed by inter columniation system at northward. The other, Genkan and Niwa northward were planed by inter columniation system. Namely, it was recognized that this building planed by inner legislation system together with inter columniation system.

I discovered "Kensuu-kumiawase-banzuke", and named it. With the document, I can compile the characteristic Banzuke as follows. This system is strong in a point to display amount between the pillar. This system was used at least from the early days to the Taisho era in the 19th century. We can confirm this system at center area of Nagaokacity and Niigata Chuetu area.
