This paper suggests an electrolytic capacitorless on-board charger for electric vehicles. It has the cascade structure of a constant frequency resonant converter for electrical isolation and a discontinuous conduction mode boost converter for charging control and input harmonic regulation. To obtain a high power factor, the harmonic modulation technique is also proposed. The proposed charger uses a very simple algorithm to achieve harmonic regulation and charging control. The purpose of this study was to examine if long-term anaerobic digestion of food waste in a semi-continuous single-stage reactor could be stabilized by supplementing trace elements. Contrary to the failure of anaerobic digestion of food waste alone, stable anaerobic digestion of food waste was achieved for 368days by supplementing trace elements. Under the conditions of OLR (organic loading rates) of 2.19-6.64g VS (volatile solid)/Lday and 20-30days of HRT (hydraulic retention time), a high methane yield (352-450mLCH 4/gVS added) was obtained, and no significant accumulation of volatile fatty acids was observed. The subsequent investigation on effects of individual trace elements (Co, Fe, Mo and Ni) showed that iron was essential for maintaining stable methane production. These results proved that the food waste used in this study was deficient in trace elements. © 2012. Source

As the nations healthcare information infrastructure continues to evolve, new technologies promise to provide readily accessible health information that can help people address personal and community health concerns. In particular, wearable and implantable medical sensors and portable computing devices present many opportunities for providing timely health information to health providers, public health professionals, and consumers. Concerns about privacy and information quality, however, may impede the development and deployment of these technologies for remote health monitoring. Patients may fail to apply sensors correctly, device can be stolen or compromised (exposing the medical data therein to a malicious party), low-cost sensors controlled by a capable attacker might generate falsified data, and sensor data sent to the server can be captured in the air by an eavesdropper; there are many opportunities for sensitive health data to be lost, forged, or exposed. In this paper, we design a framework for secure remote health-monitoring systems; we build a realistic risk model for sensor-data quality and propose a new health-monitoring architecture that is secure despite the weaknesses of common personal devices. This study investigated the effectiveness of query expansion using synonymous and co-occurrence tags in users' video searches as well as the effect of visual storyboard surrogates on users' relevance judgments when browsing videos. To do so, we designed a structured folksonomy-based system in which tag queries can be expanded via synonyms or co-occurrence words, based on the use of WordNet 2.1 synonyms and Flickr's related tags. To evaluate the structured folksonomy-based system, we conducted an experiment, the results of which suggest that the mean recall rate in the structured folksonomy-based system is statistically higher than that in a tag-based system without query expansion; however, the mean precision rate in the structured folksonomy-based system is not statistically higher than that in the tag-based system. Next, we compared the precision rates of the proposed system with storyboards (SB), in which SB and text metadata are shown to users when they browse video search results, with those of the proposed system without SB, in which only text metadata are shown. Our result showed that browsing only text surrogates-including tags without multimedia surrogates-is not sufficient for users' relevance judgments. © 2011 ASIST. Source


Disclosed are a novel C5 benzothiazolyl sulfone compound having an acetal protecting group, a method of preparing the same, and a method of efficiently preparing an apo-carotene dialdehyde compound having a polyene dialdehyde structure using the same. Also, a method of efficiently preparing lycopene by olefination (Julia-Kocienski) between the apo-carotene dialdehyde compound (C20 crocetin dialdehyde) and C10 benzothiazolyl geranyl sulfone is provided.
