Background: Cholesterol plays an important role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Results: Prion infection increased abundance of cholesterol transporter ABCA1 but reduced its functionality. Stimulation of ABCA1 reduced the conversion of prion into the pathological form. Conclusion: ABCA1 plays a key role in pathogenesis of prion disease. © 2014 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.
