Flow-deformation coupling is a very common and important problem in geotechnical engineering, but it has not been paid enough attention. Based on experimental results and some model predictions in the literature, an interpretation for the flow-deformation coupling in unsaturated compacted clay was conducted from a microscopic point of view. A drying process for compacted clay under constant stress conditions was considered in order to characterize the macroscopic behaviour and microscopic mechanism of flow-deformation coupling in unsaturated compacted clay at different stages. The effect of initial density on the coupling behaviour was also discussed. It shows that the flow-deformation coupling is playing a more important role during inter-aggregates flow than intra-aggregates flow. And the effect of initial density on coupling behaviour in unsaturated soils is more sensitive during inter-aggregates flow. ©, 2015, Shuili Xuebao/Journal of Hydraulic Engineering.
