Mixed alkali borate glasses doped with CoO, have been prepared by the melt quenching technique. Elastic properties and FT-IR spectroscopic studies have been employed to study the role of CoO and the mixed alkali effect on the structure of the investigated glass system. Elastic properties and Debye temperature have been investigated using sound wave velocity measurements at 4 MHz at room temperature. The density, molar volume and glass transition temperatures were employed to investigate the structure of these glasses. Infrared spectra of these glasses revealed that the borate network is affected by the increase in the concentration of CoO content and the mixed alkali oxides. These results are interpreted in terms of the change in the topology of these glass structures. The elastic moduli are observed to increase with the increase of CoO content due to the increased average bond connectivity. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of a precipitation hardenable Al-5wt% Mg alloy subjected to low frequency torsional oscillations and aging treatments are reported in the present work. The stress-strain response was examined at different frequencies (1.53-3.3Hz) and at constant shear strain amplitude (φ=5.69×10-4). An excessive in the softening was observed by increasing both frequency of the applied oscillations and deformation temperature. The change in the hardening and softening parameters of stress-strain relations was explained in view of spinodal decomposition in Al-Mg systems. The mean value of activation energy was found to be equal to that quoted for precipitate-dislocation intersection. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

The thermal behavior of pristine sample and gamma irradiated PADC (CR-39) polymer has been studied using thermogravimetric analysis. The changes in degradation activation energy and entropy of activation have been studied as a consequence of gamma irradiation. Water uptake of pristine sample and the effect of UV absorption have also been studied. CR-39 registers a weak effect of thermal stability for different gamma doses applied, while the etching process shows noticeable reduction in thermal stability of CR-39. The chemical structure of CR-39 detector registers high stability with gamma ray and UV of short wave length. © EDP Sciences, 2015.

In the current study, the bulk etch rate, the removal thickness percentage and the track density have been examined for gamma-irradiated at doses ranging from 0 to 100 kGy. After irradiating CR-39 detectors, they got etched at 70°C in different concentration of NaOH solutions for various time intervals. Results indicate that the bulk etch rate and the removal thickness percentage increase with the increase of gamma absorbed dose and the etchant solution concentration. The track density increases with increase of the etchant solution concentration for irradiated samples (0, 10, 50 kGy) up to 6.25 N NaOH, and then it decreases with the increase of the etchant solution concentration for un-irradiated samples and those irradiated with 10 kGy, and with the high doses the samples' surface got damaged. © The Author 2013. The reaction of pregnenolone with either 2-aminoprop-1-ene-1,1,3- tricarbonitrile or 3-oxo-3-phenylpropanenitrile gave the Knoevenagel condensation products 3 and 6, respectively. Separation of the E and Z isomeric compounds of 3 and 6 together with their structure elucidation were carried out. Some chemical transformations of the latter products were carried out and the cytotoxicity of the newly obtained products was evaluated against some cancer cell lines and a human normal cell line. The results indicated that compounds 15, 17a, 18 and 20e among the tested compounds showed the highest cytotoxicity against the cancer cell lines.© 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The reaction of cyanoacetylhydrazine (1) with acetylchloride (2) gave the N-acyl derivative 3. The latter underwent ready cyclization in sodium ethoxide to give the pyrazole derivative 4 which was the key compound for the synthesis of thiophene, thieno[2,3-b]pyridine, and thiazole derivatives. The anti-tumor evaluations of the newly synthesized products against the three human tumor cell lines, namely, breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), non-small cell lung cancer (NCI-H460), and CNS cancer (SF-268), were studied. Some of these compounds were found to exhibit much higher inhibitory effects toward the three tumor cell lines than the reference doxorubicin. Molecular modeling of the four compounds 12c, 12f, 16a, and 16d, which showed the maximum inhibitory effect, were done. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of aging conditions on the stress-strain behavior along with microstructure changes of the Al-5 wt% Mg alloy. Following solid solution treatment and aging of specimens at temperatures ranging from 373 to 573 K for various aging times (1/4 to 4 h), stress-strain tests were performed at different testing temperatures (313-343 K). The work hardening parameters (σy, σf, χp and Y) were found to decrease continuously with pre-aging times at all aging and testing temperatures, where the softening parameters (εf and L) oppose this behavior. The variation in stress-strain parameters with increasing aging temperatures and aging times was explained on the basis of structural transformations taking place in the Al-Mg alloy. A precipitate-dislocation intersections mechanism was assumed as the rate-controlling mechanism for alloy. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reaction of cyanoacetylhydrazine with chloroacetyl chloride gave N′-(2-chloroacetyl)-2-cyanoacetohydrazide. The latter underwent cyclization to afford 1-(5 amino-3-hydroxy-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2-chloroethanone, which underwent nucleophilic substitution to give 3-(5-amino-3-hydroxy-1H- pyrazol-1-yl)-3-oxopropanenitrile. The latter two compounds were used as key synthons to synthesize new thiophene, pyran, thiazole and some fused heterocyclic derivatives. The antitumor activity of the newly synthesized compounds was evaluated against three human tumor cells lines, namely breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), non-small cell lung cancer (NCI-H460) and CNS cancer (SF-268) and some of these compounds were found to exhibit much higher inhibitory effects towards the three tumor cell lines than the Gram positive control doxorubicin. © 2012 by the authors.

This work has been carried out to explore the reaction of 2-cyanoacetohydrazide with cyclohexanone to form 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindole derivatives. 2-Hydroxy-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-indole-3-carbonitrile was used as the starting material for a series of novel heterocyclic products containing fused oxazine, pyran, pyrazole, pyridazine, and thiophene rings. The antitumor activity evaluation of the newly synthesized compounds against three human tumor cells lines, breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), non-small cell lung cancer (NCI-H460), and CNS cancer (SF-268), and with normal fibroblast cells (WI 38) showed that some of these compounds exhibit much higher inhibitory effects towards the three tumor cell lines than the reference drug doxorubicin while being minimally active towards normal cells. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
