2,4-dimethoxy benzaldehyde 4-hydraoxy benzoyl hydrazone (DMBHBH) is used as a novel chromogenic organic reagent for the determination of Zinc (II) with specterophotometry. The novel chromogenic organic reagent 2,4-dimethoxy benzaldehyde-4-hydraoxy benzoyl hydrazone (DMBHBH) forms yellow coloured complexe with Zinc (II). The colour complexe shows maximum absorption at λmax 466 nm. The beer's law validity range is 0.1634 to 1.9614 (μg/ml) and optimum concentration range is 0.3269 to 1.7979 (μg/ml). The molar absorptivity and sandal's sensitivity 4.27 × 104 L.mol-1.cm-1 and 0.0015 μg/cm2 respectively. The Zinc (II) forms M:L (I:I) colour complexe with DMBHBH and stability constant of the complex was found to be. 5.76 × 106. This developed method was applied for the determination of Zinc (II) in pharmaceutical samples and obtained with good results compared with certified reference results.

We report here the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles by solution-combustion method employing a mixture of zinc nitrate and sugar (O/F = 1) as reactants. Powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and ultra violet-visible absorption spectra were employed to characterize the product. The studies showed that the ZnO nanoparticles could be used to catalytically degrade organic dyes present in waste water of textile dye effluent under UV light irradiation. More than 95 % decolourization of textile dye effluent occurs with ZnO as catalyst with in 8 min at basic medium under solar light. It was also found that chemical oxygen demand takes place at a faster rate under solar light as compared to that under UV light. The results further suggest that, ZnO nanoparticles are better catalyst than the calcined ZnO under solar and UV light irradiation.

Nanocrystalline LaMnO3+δ has been synthesized by low temperature initiated, self propagating solution combustion process. It is an inexpensive synthesis and readily yields nanocrystalline product. It was characterized by powder XRD, FT-IR and SEM. The surface area of product is ca. 24 m2/g. The SEM micrographs show that the product is voluminous, fluffy and porous. It is found that 60 mg of LaMnO3+δ powder could remove 85 % of chemical oxygen demand from 100 mL of industrial effluent at pH 10.

Hippophae commonly known as sea-buckthorn, is a versatile plant with multipurpose uses including the control of soil erosion, biological nitrogen fixation and medicinal properties. In India, two species of sea-buckthorn; namely, Hippophae salicifolia D. Don and Hippophae rhamnoides L., are very common. H. salicifolia has a shrub-to-tree habit and is restricted to the Himalayan region, whereas H. rhamnoides is bushy, growing at higher altitude in India, and widely distributed in Europe and Asia. In this study, aqueous, methanol and acetone extracts of various parts of female and male plants of H. salicifolia were evaluated for total antioxidant activity, phenolic and flavonoid contents, and correlations were made. The total phenolic and flavonoid content in all the samples ranged from 9932 to 145953mg gallic acid equivalent g-1, 13512 to 70762mg quercetin equivalent g-1 of dry extract, respectively. The highest free radical (DPPH) scavenging activity was found in methanol extracts of female bark and male leaf. Methanol extracts of male bark and male leaf showed maximum H2O2 activity at a concentration of 1mgmL-1. Antioxidant activity (FRAP method) ranged from 0.021 to 1.041 at concentrations ranging from 20 to 200gmL-1 with a reducing capacity of extracts as watermethanolacetone. Strong correlation (P0.05) was observed between DPPH scavenging activity and total phenolic content from all the extracts under study. © CSIRO 2011.
