Influent and effluent quality of municipal wastewater treatment plants plays significant roles in selecting the appropriate treatment technologies and influencing the ecology of receiving water bodies. The quality of reclaimed water sources for water reuse can also be determined based on the influent wastewater and treated effluent information. Comprehensive analyses based on statistical data collected from 3340 Chinese municipal wastewater treatment plants were performed so as to better understand the effects of influent and effluent wastewater quality on the treatment performance, environmental concerns and resources utilization. Provincial characteristics of wastewater quality both in quantity and quality were identified, providing valuable information for the proposal of targeted management strategies in pollution control, water reuse and resources recovery. The influents of municipal wastewater treatment plants in north China had high wastewater pollutant loadings, but the effluent was of high quality due to the wide implementation of water reuse strategies in northern water scarcity regions. The potentials for organic and nutrient recovery from the influents were brought forward based on the mass balance. The importance of wastewater as a resource, and the adoption of advanced treatment and resources utilization in the long-term should be highlighted for sustainable water management. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.

This study focuses on the problem of carbon emission (CO2 and CH4 as the main greenhouse gases) during the process of sludge treatment and disposal by summarizing its quantity and influential factors. CO2 was the main C compound emitted during composting, drying (bio-drying and thermal drying), land application and incineration, while CH4 was the major species during anaerobic digestion and landfilling. Composting landfills produced lower carbon emissions, while the landfills carbon emission was higher than other methods. Carbon emission can be reduced by improving aeration conditions during composting, pre-treatment and co-digestion of various sludges during anaerobic digestion and providing an organic cover in the landfill. Considering the technology of drying and incineration, reduction of energy consumption could efficiently control carbon emission. Land application produced negative carbon emission in the long term. A combination of composting and land application was the optimal scheme to reduce carbon emission during the process of sludge treatment and disposal.

The character of poem is to discover the world from the viewpoint of aesthetics.When the poem is used as a design language, its character will be introduce into the design and the design process is translated into a process of seeking after poetic-images, constructing poetic-realm and designing follow the poetic-realm. Meanwhile, it will redound to reveal Chinese culture in the design because the poem is the typical feature and important expression way of Chinese culture.In designing the Huangxing commercial pedestrian Street in Changsha, the designer epurate instills poetry-images from local geography and culture, then integrates them into a poetry-realm,and design following it. In conclusion, the poem not only be a designing way ,but more important, a way to represent the glamour of Chinese culture and a kind of interpretation to the common idea of the Orient and the Occident for Poetic Dwelling. © 2011 IEEE.

The energy efficiency of existing commercial buildings is more challenging to regulate and improve than the energy efficiency of new constructions. In 2011 and 2012, the Chinese Government selected four cities- Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, and Chongqing- to implement pilot commercial building energy efficiency retrofit program. Based on site surveys and expert interviews in these pilot cities, this research conducted a comparative analysis on incentive policies of local city level. The analysis results show that policy designs of existing commercial buildings should be further improved. The aspects that influence the implementation effect in the future, such as subsidy level, installments, and business model promotion, should be specified in the policy clauses. Referring to the technical solution and cost-benefit in Chongqing, we found that lighting system is the most common retrofit objects while envelope system is the least common one. And the subsidy incentive is greatest for educational buildings, followed by office buildings. In the end, we further discussed the problems and obstacles in commercial building retrofit market, and provided a series of recommendations. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Through questionnaire on the willingness, reasons, effect and contents of energy efficiency retrofit for existing residential buildings in Xi'an, the indoor thermal environment and resident satisfaction about indoor thermal environment was analyzed. Results show that the indoor thermal environment was poor in winter, the residents were not satisfied with the indoor thermal environment, the willingness of retrofit was strong, and the effect of retrofit was obvious. According to the survey results, the building envelope, heating metering device, temperature regulating device, heat source were reconstructed in five communities, which attracted the attention of the majority of residents. Building's energy consumption was significantly reduced. Then, the requirement and key contents of retrofit had been pointed out.

With the increasing building energy consumption, the improvement of building energy efficiency (BEE) becomes a key part of the reduction of energy intensity in the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period (during 2006 and 2010) in China. For this reason, the China central government has enforced and implemented a series of policies to promote BEE. Based on the analysis of main characteristics of BEE development in China and developmental routes of BEE, this paper systematically explored six fiscal incentive policies. Meanwhile, four specific programs involving new building, existing residential building, government office building and large-scale public building, and applications of renewable energy in building were investigated. Besides, the key factors of BEE development and BEE developmental stages were analyzed. The research revealed the present progress of implementation on BEE policies, and identified the drawbacks of the present BEE mechanism. Moreover, four proposals were recommended to enhance the development of BEE in the next "Five-Year Plan" period. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Using a new professional apparatus ( 3DMAS) , the 3D behavior of the interface between structure and gravelly soilwidely used in practical engineering was studied, and themajor influence factors w ere also discussed. The results indicate tha:t ( 1) the volumetric change of the interface is obviously observed due to shear application, and can be divided in to reversible and irreversib le components in two-waycyclic shear paths; ( 2) the relationsh IP betw een shear stress and tangential displacement has nonlinear characteristics, and becom es hardenable due to cyclic shear; ( 3) the shear streng th behaves well with normal stress acting on the interface in linear manner, which is in good accordance with theMohr-Coulomb failure criteria; ( 4) the behavior is affected by stress and boundary condition in norm al direction and contro lmode, shear amplitude, and shear path in tangential direction.

The paper reviews the Chinese policies on promoting building-integrated solar water heaters (SWHs) in urbanized areas and the corresponding experiences in implementing city-level demonstration programs using the Changjiang River (CJR) region as a study area. The progress of implementation, barriers, and effective promotion models are discussed. Furthermore, the installation potential of the SWHs in the study area are analyzed and compared with the achievements made to date.
