If you're like me, you're terrified that autonomous cars will turn into yet another excuse to do work outside the office. Well, you don't even have to wait that long for the aforementioned dystopia to become a reality! BMW announced on Wednesday three separate technologies that it hopes will fuel the next generation of connected cars from BMW Group. Connected+ builds upon BMW's current connected-car services. BMW ID brings a new level of personalization to not just one, but all connected BMWs. Finally, there's integration with Microsoft Exchange and Skype, which is the doom-and-gloom I was talking about earlier. BMW calls Connected+ a "new era" of connected services, further strengthening the bridge between smartphones and cars. Basically, these services make driving and getting around more convenient. The navigation system will be able to check your gasoline levels as you plot a route. It will let you know if you don't have the gas to make it all the way there, and it will suggest gas stations to add to your route, based on the vehicle's estimated range on the current tank. This can be done on the phone and sent over to the nav system wirelessly. Another service will automatically send location and ETA to a pre-selected group, whether it's colleagues or friends. It can inform other parties when you've hit a delay. It could also be used for safety purposes, beaming information on a child's whereabouts to a concerned parent. There's also a system that focuses on first-mile and last-mile navigation. It will give you the route from where you are, to your car, and on to your destination. Once you park the car, however far away from the destination, the system will tell you how to get there on foot. Those directions can be sent to your phone, so you won't have to memorize any maps or jot anything down. Similar to what Cadillac is doing with the latest version of its CUE infotainment system, BMW intends to bring a serious degree of personalization to not just the owner's car, but whatever BMW Group car he or she commands. The BMW ID is a vehicle-independent profile that exists in the cloud. It contains personalized vehicle settings -- such as preferred mobility methods, navigation routes and specific settings for the car itself. Whenever a person with a BMW ID gets into a connected BMW and logs into his or her profile, all that information is transferred over to the vehicle. There's no need to wade through menus and tabs galore in order to set the car up the way a driver wants it. Just hook the car up to a BMW ID and that's all she wrote. Here's the one you're dreading. Yes, BMW is making it easier for you to do work in the car, whether you like it or not, whether it's distracting or not. Starting this fall, BMW will offer secure in-car access to Microsoft Exchange email accounts. You'll be able to view and manage your emails and appointments in the car, and you can even compose emails using voice recognition. Good luck trying to come up with an excuse as to why you didn't send that email from the driver's seat (other than, you know, it's still a major distraction). This integration can also do some neat things. It can import addresses from appointment entries, shoving them right into the navigation system. It can also identify and flag Skype meetings on your infotainment system, and all it takes is a touch of the iDrive controller to enter the meeting. No, there won't be a camera trained on your face, just the audio. Instead of imagining what people will be able to do in autonomous cars, BMW is already getting ready for that eventuality. You may not like that the answer involves work, but it does, and it will, especially when passengers won't need to deal with vehicle controls at all. We're not there quite yet, but instead of twiddling our thumbs in the first generation of autonomous cars while automakers work on giving us something to do, BMW is ready to spring out the gates at full speed. In the meantime, do your best to schedule meetings once you've already entered the office -- no need to overdo it.

(TAEC) introduced an automotive-grade Ethernet bridge solution for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and other automotive applications. The TC9560XBG supports standards such as IEEE 802.1AS and IEEE 802.1Qav, generally referred to as Ethernet-AVB (Audio Video Bridging). The Ethernet-AVB standard enables stable, reliable multimedia transmissions, making it suitable for IVI and telematics. (Earlier post.) TAEC also announced it is working with Qualcomm Technologies to bring to the automotive market advanced connected car platforms powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 820A and Snapdragon 602A processors, and telematics solutions powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE modem. Connecting complex automotive electronics with an industry-standard Ethernet protocol also contributes to cost savings, reduced harness weight and improved mileage. In addition, the TC9560XBG will be AEC-Q100 qualified to enable enhanced performance in physically demanding automotive environments. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820A processor with X12 LTE Modem was developed to support the advanced connectivity, graphics, video, power, and battery efficiency needed for automotive solutions. The processor integrates a new custom 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Kryo CPU, the Qualcomm Adreno 530 GPU, as well as the Qualcomm Hexagon 680 DSP with Hexagon Vector eXtensions. Autonomous Cars - Five Things To Know About Self Driving Cars Renault and Nissan have found the perfect cloud to power their self-driving car alliance: Microsoft Azure Cloud. Under a new partnership, the Renault-Nissan Alliance will tap Microsoft's cloud expertise to power up connected cars. In a joint statement on Monday, the companies note that they will use Microsoft Azure Cloud for the automakers' navigation and software, remote monitoring and predictive maintenance services. The deal is global and for multiple years, focusing on next-generation technologies and taking connected driving to the next level. Nissan, Renault and Microsoft will collaborate to develop connected services for vehicles powered by Azure, aiming to enhance customer experience by delivering vehicle-centric services, advanced navigation, over-the-air (OTA) updates, predictive maintenance and more. Ogi Redzic, senior vice president of the Connected Vehicles and Mobility Services for the Renault-Nissan Alliance, points out that cars are becoming increasingly intelligent, connected and personal, and this new venture will speed things up. "Partnering with Microsoft allows us to accelerate the development of the associated key technologies needed to enable scenarios our customers want and build all-new ones they haven't even imagined," says Redzic. "We aim to become the provider of connected mobility for everyone with one single global platform." The Renault-Nissan Alliance is working on making autonomous driving and connectivity features mainstream, pushing them to vehicles that wouldn't break the bank. The automakers hope to accelerate the development of connectivity features and technologies to push them in more than 10 self-driving vehicles by 2020. Microsoft Azure cloud services will deliver "unlimited scale," enabling the Alliance to offer global services for its wide customer pool. According to official statements, the Alliance chose Microsoft Azure partly due to the enterprise-level security it offers, as well as Microsoft's "rigorous commitment to compliance." Moreover, Microsoft Azure plays nice with several operating systems, tools and programming language, which allows for flexibility and options to develop a common platform so that services could benefit both Nissan and Renault connected vehicles. Renault and Nissan are just the latest to tap Microsoft's cloud expertise, but they're hardly the only automakers to do so. Volvo, BMW and To yota are other carmakers that are using Microsoft Azure for various applications, and the list is expected to grow in the future. At the same time, Microsoft is not the only player that wants a piece of the autonomous driving pie. As the race is heating up on the self-driving car scene, both Microsoft and Amazon are looking to play a bigger role by offering their cloud computing services. Autonomous Cars - Five Things To Know About Self Driving Cars All set to drive into the future are Tata Motors of India and Microsoft who are joining forces to make connected vehicles that will offer people not only a smart, but safe driving experience. On Thursday, Feb. 16, the two companies made an announcement regarding their strategic collaboration, which aims to offer consumers an enhanced driving experience. Per the announcement, both Tata Motors and Microsoft will be coming together to ensure inter-connectivity in cars, autonomous vehicle technology and similar other enhancements for the futuristic cars. According to Anant Maheshwari, the President of Microsoft India, use of features like IoT, artificial intelligence (AI) as well machine learning technologies will be implemented in the vehicles. The goal of the collaboration is to ensure all the vehicle owners across the world get a safe and fulfilling driving experience. "We are excited to partner with Tata Motors as they embark on a new journey of innovation with Microsoft Azure cloud. Using IoT, AI and machine learning technologies, we will provide vehicle owners in India and across the world with a safe, productive and fun driving experience," shared Maheshwari. According to the two companies, this collaboration will lead to the creation of a safe, smart driving experience both under the digital and physical worlds. Microsoft already has similar partnerships with other carmakers such as Renault and Volvo, to ensure that the next-generation smart cars have highly defined intelligence along with features such as enhanced navigation system and updated maintenance. Microsoft Azure cloud computing technologies will offer the advanced features in Tata Motors' cars. According to a source close to the company, the collaboration of Microsoft with Tata Motors is the best way to promote the Make in India campaign as the two companies will be mainly working on products related to the automobile space. This move may also help Tata Motors to carry forward its Make in India Initiative. The expected showcase of the future driving experience is supposed to be on March 7 at the Geneva Motor Show. The upcoming concept cars expected to be showcased at the auto show are estimated to include all the functions enabled by Microsoft such as the navigation predictive maintenance. Vehicle owners may be able to receive notifications based on their point of interest, as well as route assisted recommendations. BlackBerry is expanding its relationship with Ford Motor Company as it accelerates its move away from hardware and focuses on software, specifically its well-regarded QNX platform and security software. As part of the agreement, BlackBerry will have a dedicated team working with Ford on expanding the use of BlackBerry's QNX Neutrino Operating System, Certicom security technology, QNX hypervisor, and QNX audio processing software. Although the value of the deal was kept confidential, Forrester analyst Jeffrey Hammond speculated on the financial side of the agreement and said, "It's significant that the QNX team is dedicating engineers to Ford as part of the deal. That sort of arrangement usually only happens when the a deal is in the 10's of millions (or more) over a long term period." The future of BlackBerry lies in the QNX platform, according to analysts. QNX was acquired by BlackBerry in 2010 and Ford chose it to replace Microsoft for its Sync infotainment platform. The QNX platform has a reputation for being secure, and it is already in more than 60 million vehicles from 20 different automakers, including the Sync 3 system in Ford's current year models. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The deal "makes BlackBerry have a very deep chance of changing. It plays right into IoT and right into connected cars or even self driving cars. It's that important," said William Stofega, an analyst with the International Data Corporation. "It's an operating system that's not just smart, it's highly reliable." (TechRepublic) This agreement strongly anchors BlackBerry's transition from a hardware company to a software company, said Bob Bilbruck, CEO of B2 Group. "It also allows them to expand their footprint within the connected car segment from just the infotainment part of the IoT equation to now the more meaningful parts of the platforms...The future for BlackBerry is bright because it gives them a major footprint in connected cars with a top three automaker and a huge growing market to derive revenue from," Bilbruck said. "It will lead to relationships with other partners within the auto industry and other parts of technology. Apple has shown interest in the QNX platform and may either try to hire away QNX engineers or partner with BlackBerry to forward their initiatives in this space also," Bilbruck said. Hammond said, "I think it shows BlackBerry still has a tenable future in embedded computing, and that they will benefit from the expansion of the Internet of Things. As more and more companies look to connect expensive, durable or safety critical goods to the internet, the concerns that make QNX appealing will give the company continuing opportunities to grow their customer base." QNX provides the fundamental building blocks needed for the in-car modules that control a self-driving car. "This makes QNX and its features invaluable in the future of the connected car ecosystem and the advancement, and speed, of the advancement of these technologies," Bilbruck said. Stofega said, "It's a well respected operating system that isn't just in cars but nuclear power plants, everywhere. It's a highly secure operating system. It's something you would use when you want to make sure that there aren't going to be any mistakes or reboots or any of the things that could harm production." As for what it means overall, Stofega said: "You can't predict anything, anything can happen, but if there's one thing to bet on, it would be BlackBerry and QNX in general." Bilbruck said: "This means Cinderella (BlackBerry) is back at the ball and this time she isn't going to turn into a pumpkin when the clock strikes midnight in regards to the IoT marketplace. In fact, BlackBerry may become the fairy godmother of these auto manufacturers as far as embedded intelligence systems within their vehicles go. In three short years this could make BlackBerry the 800-pound gorilla again in a fast growing market."
