This paper presents the results of research on the fusion of tracking radar and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) in an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). First, the concept of these systems according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is described, then a set of theoretical information on radar tracking and the fusion method itself is given and finally numerical results with real data are presented. Two methods of fusion, together with their parameters, are examined. A proposal for calculating the covariance matrix for radar and AIS data is also given, and the paper ends with conclusions. The paper discuss selected issues in data fusion of tracking radar and AIS data from the point of view of INS. Firstly it presents the concept of INS according to IMO and the place for radar-AIS fusion in it. The short characteristics of radar - AIS fusion concept is given. Main part of the paper includes description of the most important problems of inconsistency in such a fusion. Finally an example results of the research on radar-AIS association are given. © 2013 German Inst of Navigation. Source

In this paper it is stated, that a set of quality features of metal matrix composite castings differs from the same set for castings of classic materials, although some features are common for both of these material groups. These features (pertaining to a set of quality characteristics of composite castings) have been named as specific, they have not been determined yet and a description of material quality should be performed (according to the qualitology) on a principle of description of quality characteristics of this product. Therefore, this set of features has been determined. It was proposed to add the following characteristics to the set of specific features of composite castings quality: matrix material, reinforcement material, binding between components and porosity of the composite casting. In this set a sub-set of quality characteristics of composite castings was also determined. Source

The paper presents an example of qualitative and quantitative application of a method for assessing component importance of a reliability structure in the case of a complex technical system based on the example of the subsystem of a marine power plant, that is, a lube oil system for sealing a stern tube. An example of the importance of the analysis considered in terms of not only reliability but also safety (impact of a component failure on human, machine and the environmental safety). Safety is usually analyzed in terms of quality, so the approach of trying to combine quantitative and qualitative estimation has been called a qualitative and quantitative method. A two - criteria importance of components according to the reliability criteria and safety criteria have been determined. The directions for further research have been outlined. Source

The paper is concerned with the problem of adaptive tracking system control synthesis. It is assumed that a nonlinear, feedback linearizable object dynamics (model structure) is (partially) unknown and some of its nonlinear characteristics can be approximated by a sort of functional approximators. It has been proven that proportional state feedback plus parameter adaptation are able to assure its asymptotic stability. This form of controller permits online compensation of unknown model nonlinearities and exogenous disturbances, which results in satisfactory tracking performance. An interesting feature of the system is that the whole process control is performed without requisite asymptotic convergence of approximator parameters to the postulated 'true' values. It has been noticed that the parameters play rather a role of slack variables on which potential errors (that otherwise would affect the state variables) cumulate. The system's performance has been tested via Matlab/Simulink simulations via an example of ship path-following problem. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Source
