To satisfy the climatological need of our naval ships successfully participating in the "Rim Pacific" Joint military exercises (RPJME), the characteristics of the RPJME sea surface wind (SSW) and pressure were preliminary analyzed and diagnosed using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and other data, and the weather situation composite analysis was conducted. It is found that there is a gale (more or equal to grade 5) belt between the North Pacific subtropical High and the equator almost all the year round. Its position moves northward with weak activity in summer, and southward with strong activity in winter. The RPJME region is impacted by the Hawaiihigh pressure throughout the year, and the high pressure is used to enhancing from winter to summer with seasonal transition. At the same time, the center of high pressure extends northwestward. The daily frequency of gale is the highest south of Hawaii, and becomes weaker in the north region. The closer to the islands, the smaller the surface waves are, which illustrates the obvious island effect. When there is a strong high pressure in north of Hawaii and moves southward, there will be a gale in both south and north of the RPJME area; Besides, there will also be a gale under the control of both weak high pressure and a low-value system in south of the RPJME. © 2015, University of Science and Technology.
