Power quality is an issue that is becoming increasingly important to electricity consumers at all levels of usage. Sensitive equipment and non-linear loads are now more common in both the industrial/commercial sectors and the domestic environment. Because of this a heightened awareness of power quality is developing amongst electricity users. This article presents the fuzzy logic approach to determine the power quality. The performance of three-phase induction motor is observed for different power quality conditions in laboratory. The power quality is in terms of voltage is intentionally disturbed by means of three-phase motor alternator set and chopper circuit. It is observed that the fuzzy system is able to make correct diagnosis of power quality. It is also observed that as the power quality become poor, the motor efficiency decreases, causing significant rise in power input to meet the rated load demand, and thereby rise in electric bill.

This paper presents Computational Intelligence Algorithm (CIA) based Condition Monitoring System (CMS) for Power Transformer. The online as well as offline data is used for making the decision. The mechanism is developed for real time application using the analogue to digital interfacing system for data transmission. Performance is tested for 132/33 kV, 25 MVA Power Transformer connected in power system and its results are found satisfactory. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel approach based on the loci of instantaneous symmetrical components called "Wing Shape" which requires the measurement of three input stator currents and voltages to diagnose interturn insulation faults in three phase induction motors operating under different loading conditions. In this methodology, the effect of unbalanced supply conditions, constructional imbalances and measurement errors are also investigated. The sizes of the wings determine the loading on the motor and the travel of the wings while their areas determine the degree of severity of the faults. This approach is also applied to detect open circuit faults or single phasing conditions in induction motors. In order to validate this method, experimental results are presented for a 5 hp squirrel cage induction motor. The proposed technique helps improve the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the motor system and industrial plant. It also allows maintenance to be performed in a more efficient manner, since the course of action can be determined based on the type and severity of the fault.

Condition monitoring and diagnostic testing is a vital task in front of a power system engineer. He has to monitor various parameters such as breakdown voltage (Bdv), Parts Per Million (PPM), DGA, Furan analysis, Partial discharge, tan delta, SFRA, winding resistance, polarization index etc quite frequently. The deviation from standard results may affect performance and health of the transformer. However many a times it so happens that the results are within permissible limits but the trend of results over last 2–3 years indicate a deterioration. It is therefore important to monitor the trend for last 2–3 years in order to ascertain healthiness of transformer. This paper recommends a novice approach to monitor the performance of transformer. For this purpose, a simple database using Java-Netbeans is prepared. Using Structured Query Language (SQL) it is ensured whether the parameters are within permissible limits or otherwise. The method is so simple that the knowledge of Java programming is not at all required. Using simple SQL commands the data is retrieved from database.
