The single crystals of RbCa1−yEuyX3 (X = Cl, Br; y = 0.03, 0.05, 0.08) were obtained by the Bridgman–Stockbarger technique. The luminescent and luminescent-kinetic properties of RbCaCl3:5%Eu and RbCaBr3:5%Eu under photo- and X-ray excitation (35–40 keV) at 77 and 293 K were studied. The luminescence spectra of the crystals exhibit one dominant band which corresponds to Eu2+ emission. The scintillation properties of all the grown crystals under 137Cs 662 keV gamma-ray excitation were investigated. The maximal values of relative light output were found for RbCaCl3:8%Eu2+ and RbCaBr3:8%Eu2+ which are approximately equal to 50% and 77% of NaI:Tl with decay time 2.7 and 3.6 μs respectively. The hygroscopicity of the crystals was estimated. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

The current work describes two Eu2+-activated scintillation materials, K2BaCl4 and K2BaBr4. The single crystals of K2Ba1-yEuyX4 (X = Cl, Br, y = 0.005, 0.03 and 0.05) were grown using the Bridgman–Stockbarger method. The spectral-luminescent and luminescence-kinetic properties under the excitation by photo and X-ray quanta are studied. The scintillation properties of K2BaX4:Eu2+ (X = Cl, Br) crystals have been investigated using a137Cs gamma source. The relative light yield increases with the Eu2+ concentration in K2BaX4:Eu2+. Moisture sensitivity of the crystals was evaluated and compared with NaI:Tl crystal. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Spectral-kinetic luminescent characteristics of CsI-BaI2 (1 mol%) crystal have been studied in the 1.55-16 eV energy range at T = 10 and 295 K. The formation of SrCl2-Eu microcrystals embedded in NaCl host has been demonstrated for NaCl-SrCl2(l mol.%)-EuCl3(0.02 mol.%) composition. The size of SrCl2-Eu microcrystals is in the 1-10 μm range. The spectral and luminescence properties of NaCl-Eu(0.1 mol.%), SrCl2-Eu(0.1 mol.%) and NaCl-SrCl2(l mol.%)-3(0.02 mol.%) crystals under optical and X-ray excitation have been studied. The luminescence parameters of SrCl2-Eu microcrystals embedded in NaCl host are revealed to be substantially similar to those of SrCl2-Eu(0.1 mol.%) single crystal. © 2010 - STC "Institute for Single Crystals".

BaCl2:Eu2+ microcrystals embedded in the NaCl host have been obtained in the NaCl-BaCl2(1 mol%)-EuCl3(0.02 mol%) crystalline system. The influence of the annealing conditions on the formation of such particles has been studied. In particular, long-term annealing (at 200°s during 100 h) promotes the microcrystals formation in the NaCl-BaCl2-Eu crystalline system. The subsequent heat treatment (annealed at 600°s during 72 h and quenched to room temperature) is shown to lead to the destruction of the majority of these particles. The luminescent-kinetic properties of BaCl2:Eu2+ microcrystals have been studied upon the ultra-violet excitation by the synchrotron radiation. The X-ray excited luminescence has been measured in order to estimate the distribution of europium ions between microcrystals and the NaCl host. The excitation mechanisms of Eu2+ ions in the NaCl-BaCl2-Eu crystalline system are discussed. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The spectral-luminescent properties of CsI-BaCl2(1 mol%)-Eu(0.02 mol%) crystalline system are studied. Europium ion doped BaCl2 microcrystals embedded in a CsI matrix are revealed on CsI-BaCl2(1 mol%)-Eu(0.02 mol%) freshly cleaved surface by the scanning electron microscopy. The size of microcrystals is shown to be within 0.5-5 microns. The luminescent parameters of the BaCl2-Eu2+ microcrystals are shown to be similar to ones of a single crystal analogue. The 4f → 5d absorption transitions in europium ions and the reabsorption of the intrinsic emission of the CsI host are the main excitation mechanisms of europium luminescence in the BaCl2 microcrystals. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
