The shrinkage rate and size distribution of tobacco strips after being redried at different temperatures were studied. The results showed that: 1) During redrying, the shrinkage rate of strips positively correlated to redrying temperature; while at the same temperature, the stalk positions in the order of shrinkage rate were lower leaves > middle leaves > upper leaves. 2) After redrying, the percentage of strips with areas under 1000 mm2 increased, while that over 1000 mm2 decreased, at a rate positively correlated to strip's size. 3) The characteristic size of strips decreased significantly after redrying, and for the strips from the same stalk position, the decrease extent of characteristic size positively correlated to redrying temperature. At the same temperature, the stalk positions in the order of change rate of characteristic size were lower leaves > middle leaves > upper leaves. 4) Redrying increased the uniformity of strip size distribution, the uniformity coefficient of strip size increased after redrying; and for the strips from the same stalk position, size uniformity positively correlated to redrying temperature.

In order to describe the shape of tobacco strips accurately, a measuring method based on computer vision was proposed. Image segmentation method based on Mean-shift algorithm was used to extract the area, where tobacco strip was present from an image, then the profile of tobacco strip was precisely extracted by a morphological gradient algorithm. The shape of tobacco strip was quantitatively described by Fractal dimension and Fourier descriptors separately. The ability of shape description of Fractal dimension and Fourier descriptors was tested with tobacco strips of different shapes. The results showed that for tobacco strips of different shapes, Fractal dimension and Fourier descriptors took different values and the difference between the two increased with the widening of the discrepancy between shapes in a monotonic way. It was verified that both methods were reliable. By adopting the two methods together, the shape of tobacco strip can be more effectively evaluated. ©, 2015, Editorial Office of Tobacco Science and Technology. All right reserved.

For even distribution of strips in case, the effects of the spreader mechanism movement, in terms of stroke, reverse frequency and central position of movement, on sampling volume and density variation ratio (DVR) in strips case were investigated. The air cylinder's running was controlled by a pressure reducing valve and of strips was determined by the 9-point method. The results showed that: when the stroke was of 75 mm, the central position was at the place where air cylinder extended out for 175 mm and the working pressure was from 0.1 to 0.15 MPa, the DVR was less than 12% during test.
