Carbon steel plates are used in bridge construction, shipbuilding, pressure vessels, piping, cranes, commercial vehicles, and construction/earthmoving machinery. Depending on the individual application, the plates are quenched and tempered after austenitizing to obtain specified properties such as strength, hardness, wear resistance, and abrasion resistance. For rolled steel products such as plate, the thermal process consists of three stages: • Austenitizing • Quenching • Tempering These process stages are defined specifically for the material and application, and are provided in Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) diagrams. When producing individual parts, it is generally possible to take the time constraints for these processes into consideration without any problems. In contrast, the continuous processing normally required for a plate production line poses considerable challenges for plant design and construction. The quality of the end product is determined by temperature control during heating, quenching and tempering. The specified microstructure can on be achieved for a specific material grade and plate size if the times and temperatures laid down in the CCT diagram are followed within very tight tolerances. By using enhanced mathematical models for heating and cooling, this process can be realized in full automatic operation. AISTech 2015 Proceedings © 2015 by AIST Source

In the past, steel plate was more or less a mass-produced commodity, However, over the past few years, increasing calls for high-strength, wear-resistant special steels from downstream industrial sectors have meant that steel plate has more and more become a high-quality product. The result has been the development of a new market sector, which is likely to remain the fastestgrowing sector in the steel plate industry in the future. New material grades and increasingly stringent strength, corrosion resistance and forming specifications are some of the requirements resulting from market trends towards leaner steel structures bringing greater benefits in use. In order to meet these requirements, it is necessary to deploy not only advanced rolling mill technology but also innovative heat treatment, allowing the specifications to be met in line with customers' requirements and at reasonable cost. A combined annealing and pickling line was transferred from Turin to the Terni Works in northern Italy at ThyssenKrupp Stainless Europe. The project was conceived and implemented to modernize and prepare the plant for future improvements, minimize the civil works, modify the line configuration but avoid major changes to the operator interface and standard operating practices. The furnace sections were thoroughly revamped by Tenova LOl Italimpianti and a new preheating chamber recovering heat from the exhausted fumes was installed to preheat the strip entering the furnace. The pickling section, refurbished with important improvements, is operated with the eco-friendly pickling solution. An in-depth survey was conducted on site showed that the perfect integration of old and new devices made possible fast installation and commissioning. Source

In the case of a rotary hearth furnace of annular construction for the heat treatment of workpieces, which has a furnace chamber, an annular rotary hearth, a rotary drive which drives the rotary hearth and a plurality of racks for receiving or supporting workpieces, which are arranged on the annular rotary hearth and are provided with receiving elements, which divide a respective rack into at least two horizontal planes for receiving workpieces, the intention is to provide a solution which makes extremely uniform heating of the workpieces to be heattreated in the furnace chamber possible in a structurally simple and cost-effective manner. This is achieved in that provision is made, at least between two horizontal planes of a respective rack, of at least one additional heating apparatus which heats the workpieces held in the corresponding horizontal planes.

Following the increasing efforts to reduce the weight of cars for the benefit of lower energy consumption, even complex car components such as structural parts are more and more made of aluminium. This requires close tolerances in view of the geometry and mechanical parameters of the parts. To meet these requirements the parts are hardened very carefully in order to achieve the specified properties. Source
