Laser surface hardening was carried out by HL-1500 CO2 laser machine on 40Cr steel, and the influence of scanning space on microstructure and properties of laser transformation hardened layers were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, microhardness meter, potentiostat and abrasive wear testing machine etc. The result indicated that, the laser transformation hardened layer is mainly consisted of Fe,Fe3C,Fe-Cr and Cr3C3. The tempering effect is obvious when scanning space is 8 mm, and when scanning space is 16 mm, the tempering effect is not obvious. The microhardness of the samples increased at first and then decreased with the increasing of the scanning space. The maximum microhardness 794. 7 MPa is obtained when scanning space is 12 mm. Both the corrosion resistance and wear resistance are enhanced with the increasing of the scanning space.
