A series of Mg-Al-Fe hydrotalcites were synthesized by co-precipitation method and used to prepare catalysts by calcination at different temperature. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, FTIR, TG and CO2-TPD. The ethoxylation reaction of ethylene oxide(EO) with ethanol over the catalysts were investigated in a fix-bed reactor. The effects of calcination temperature, n(Mg):n(Al) and Fe loading on the performances of the catalysts were studied. It was found that the basicity of the catalysts had an evident influence on the ethoxylation reaction. The conversion of EO and the selectivity to ethylene glycol monoethyl ether reached 81.5% and 92.3% respectively under the optimal conditions of 0.4 MPa, 393 K, n(ethanol):n(EO)7:1, LHSV 3 h-1, n(Mg):n(Al):n(Fe) in the catalyst 10:5:0.76 and calcinating temperature for the catalyst 773 K.

Immobilized SnCl4 solid acid catalysts were prepared and used in Prins condensation reaction of isobutene with formaldehyde to 3-methylbut-3-en-1-ol(MBOH, an organic intermediate. Effects of the immobilized SnCl4 catalyst supports, namely SiO2, SiO2-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3, and solvent type on the condensation reaction were investigated. The results indicated that the immobilized SnCl4/SiO2 catalyst exhibited high activity and selectivity to MBOH. Strong polar aprotic solvent dioxane was beneficial to depolymerization of paraformaldehyde to formaldehyde, so solubility of formaldehyde in the reaction system was improved and form of carbonium ion was promoted. Under optimal reaction condition-. SnCl4/SiO2 catalyst dosage 0.24 mmol(based on SnCl4, isobutene dosage 8.4 g, paraformaldehyde dosage 1.5 g, dioxane 15 mL, reaction pressure 2.2 MPa, reaction temperature 100 °C and reaction time 3 h, selectivity and yield to MBOH were 81% and 55%, respectively. After reuse of the catalyst 4 times, yield of MBOH still reached 45%.

Grafting SnCl4 on inorganic support as a novel solid acid catalyst was used to catalyze the Prins condensation reaction of isobutene with formaldehyde to produce 3-methylbut-3-en-1-ol (MBOH). Three supports of SiO 2, SiO2-Al2O3 and γ-Al 2O3 were used to prepare the catalysts, and the structure and acid property of the tin chloride species formed over different supports was investigated. It was found that the SnCl4 grafted on SiO2 exhibited high activity and selectivity at a low reaction temperature of 100 °C, with formaldehyde conversion of 55% and MBOH selectivity of 92%. The superior performance of SnClx-SiO2 catalyst was attributed to its low electron density of tin nucleus and strong Lewis acidity. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
