The design of electromagnetic interference (EMI) input filters, needed for switched power converters to fulfill the regulatory standards, is typically associated with high development effort. This paper presents a guideline for a simplified differential-mode (DM) filter design. First, a procedure to estimate the required filter attenuation based on the total input rms current using only a few equations is given. Second, a volume optimization of the needed DM filter based on the previously calculated filter attenuation and volumetric component parameters is introduced. It is shown that a minimal volume can be found for a certain optimal number of filter stages. The considerations are exemplified for two single-phase power factor correction converters operated in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes, respectively. Finally, EMI measurements done with a 300-W power converter prototype prove the proposed filter design method. © 2006 IEEE. Source

In this paper, a novel bearingless motor (50 N\cdot\hbox{m} /2.5 kW) for high-purity mixing applications is presented. The motor consists of a stator with concentrated windings and an exterior rotor with permanent magnets. The rotor is propelled and spatially suspended only by means of magnetic fields. This paper deals with the functionality and the mechanical setup of the new motor. Thereby, the optimization of the motor design is presented in detail. In order to evaluate the load of the bearingless motor in mixing operation, a fluid simulation is set up. Moreover, after the identification of the losses, a thermal simulation is established in order to predict the temperature distribution within the motor. This paper presents a novel exterior rotor topology of a bearingless brushless synchronous motor with rated power of 300 W. Owing to the large possible magnetic gap and the absence of mechanical bearings, this motor is especially qualified for high-purity and low-shear applications (e.g., bioreactor mixing). Both torque and magnetic bearing forces are created inside this disk-shaped motor using a sophisticated control (proportional-integral- differential vector control) with superimposed drive and bearing currents fed to the concentrated combined stator coils. Optimal design is derived based on an electromagnetic analysis using the three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM), and the simulation results are verified with a prototype mixer setup. © 2011 IEEE.
