An assessment of the present status of sites used for peaceful underground nuclear explosions on the territory of the Russian Federation is given. The desirability of recognizing the central zones of nuclear explosions and surface repositories formed near them for storing special radwastes is substantiated. It is shown that formation water is the main substance for removing technogenic radionuclides to the Earth's surface as well as upper-lying water-bearing levels. Data are presented on the present radio-ecological status of the territories of peaceful nuclear explosions and their possible classification according to the degree of radiation safety. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
