Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated as filler in several elasto mers in order to obtain rubbers with improved electrical and thermal conductivity. It was possible to prepare composites with very low electrical percolation thresholds by direct mixing polymer and CNTs in an internal mixer. The effect of CNTs on vulcanisation behaviour and crosslink density of the rubbers was examined and it turned out that small amounts of CNTs accelerate the curing reaction with sulphur curing systems and contribute to an increase in crosslink density. It could be confirmed that composites of elastomers and CNTs are principally suitable for manufacturing heating elements with controllable surface temperature.
