Objectives:Morphology and cytogenetics are currently used to define prognosis in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). However, these parameters have some limits. Flow cytometry has been recently included in the diagnostic panel for MDS, and its prognostic significance is under evaluation. Methods: Marrow aspirates from 424 MDS patients were analyzed by flow cytometry to evaluate the impact of bone marrow cell immunophenotype on overall survival (OS) and leukemia-free survival (LFS). The immature compartment of myeloblasts was analyzed by the quantitative expression of CD34 (<3% vs. ≥3%), CD117, and CD11b -/CD66b - (<5% vs. ≥5%); myeloid maturation was analyzed by the expression of CD11b +/CD66b ++ (<15% vs. ≥15%) and CD11b +/CD66b + (<25% vs. ≥25%). Results:  In univariate analysis, the expression of immaturity markers (CD34 +, CD117 +, and CD11b -/CD66b -) was associated with shorter LFS and OS (P<0.0001); higher expression of differentiation markers (CD11b +/CD66b ++ and CD11b +/CD66b +) was associated with longer LFS (P<0.0001 and P=0.0002, respectively) and OS (P<0.0001). In multivariate analysis, expression of CD34 + (P=0.007), CD117 + (P=0.013), and CD11b +/CD66b ++ (P=0.023) retained independent prognostic value for OS, while only the expression of CD34 + was a prognostic factor for LFS (P=0.0003). Two different risk groups were defined according to the presence of 0-1 or ≥2 of these factors with significant different LFS and OS (P<0.0001). This score showed prognostic value in predicting survival even in subanalysis according to IPSS and WHO subgroups. Conclusions: Flow cytometric analysis in MDS may provide meaningful prognostic information. Blast percentage expressed as CD117 + or CD34 + cells and the quantitative assessment of myeloid maturation showed prognostic value for survival. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a public health problem with high prevalence worldwide. We evaluated levels of specific IgE, IgA, and IgG4 antibodies to the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dpt) house dust mite and to its major allergens (Der p1 and Der p2) in serum and saliva samples from allergic and nonallergic children. A total of 86 children were analyzed, from which 72 had AR and 14 were nonallergic healthy children. Serum IgE and serum/salivary IgG4 levels to Dpt, Der p1, and Der p2 were higher in allergic children whereas serum/salivary IgA levels to all allergens were higher in nonallergic children. IgE levels positively correlated with IgG4 and IgA to all allergens in allergic children, while IgA levels negatively correlated with IgG4 to Dpt and Der p1 in nonallergic children. In conclusion, mite-specific IgA antibodies predominate in the serum and saliva of nonallergic children whereas mite-specific IgE and IgG4 are prevalent in allergic children. The presence of specific IgA appears to have a key role for the healthy immune response to mucosal allergens. Also, specific IgA measurements in serum and/or saliva may be useful for monitoring activation of tolerance-inducing mechanisms during allergen specific immunotherapeutic procedures, especially sublingual immunotherapy. The effect of three different periods of storage life (0, 15 and 30 days) on the microbiological quality of several foods elaborated with the sous vide cook-chill procedure in a restaurant was studied. These foods are grouped in three categories: meat (breast chicken, foie gras, pork loin and entrecote of veal), fish (codfish, gilt head sea bream, hake and salmon) and vegetable (broccoli, courgette, potato and carrot). Total plate counts in the products studied were in the range of <1.00-3.74 log10 cfu/g. Coagulase negative staphylococci were isolated in the three categories, Enterococcus spp. were isolated from foie gras and Pantoea agglomerans from salmon and carrot. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes and Clostridium perfringens were not detected in any of the samples studied. As a consequence of our study, the restaurant has developed and implemented a traceability system to achieve food safety. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Aim: The purpose of this research was to assess the effects of the flower essences She Oak and Bush Fuchsia on behavioral anxiety in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Methods: For four weeks, OVX rats received the flower essences She Oak, Bush Fuchsia or a combination of the two. After flower therapy, the animals were subjected to an elevated plus maze (EPM) behavioral anxiety-test. Cortisol blood level was also evaluated. Results: OVX rats treated with the flower essence She Oak became less anxious and had more entries in the EPM open arms. On the other hand, OVX rats treated with the Bush Fuchsia essence spent more time in the EPM closed arms. This finding is similar to those obtained with controls. In addition, OVX rats that received She Oak and Bush Fuchsia in combination presented the same results as those receiving the Bush Fuchsia alone. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the flower essence She Oak could have an anxiolytic effect in OVX rats, but that the combination therapy of the She Oak and Bush Fuchsia could avoid the effects of the She Oak. © 2010 Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Introduction. Sarcopenia is a process characterized by reduction in protein mass and muscle strength with increasing age, especially in the postmenopausal period, resulting in functional limitations and with great impact on the physical autonomy of the elderly. Objective. To evaluate the effects of diets with vegetable proteins (VP) or animal proteins (AP) associated with resistance training (RT) on the structural and biochemical parameters of the medial gastrocnemius muscle in Wistar rats with sarcopenia. Methods. An experimental model with ovariectomized rats was used to induce sarcopenia and resistance training. The histochemical technique was used for the typing of muscle fibers, the cross-sectional area of myocytes, and volume densities of myocytes and interstitium; the technique of Picrosirius stain was used to highlight the collagen fibers. Results. The VP diet was not able to minimize the effects of sarcopenia in the medial gastrocnemius of sedentary animals and when associated with RT, it promoted maintenance of the CSA, attenuating the atrophy of type IIB fibers in the medial gastrocnemius. The AP diet in sedentary animals protected the type I fibers. When combined with RT, the AP promoted muscle remodeling, with reduction in volume density of type I and IIA fibers, and increase of IIB fibers, together with an increase in collagen volume density. Conclusion. The data suggest a tendency to better results of hypertrophy in animal groups that consumed the AP diet, even the sedentary animals, although more evident in those trained. © 2016 Glaucia Figueiredo Braggion et al.
