Cathodic hydrogen charging was applied to low-carbon pipeline-steel samples produced using different thermomechanical paths. The samples developed similar microstructures but different crystallographic textures and grain-boundary distributions. This made it possible to investigate the resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) of steels with strong {1. 1. 1}ND and {1. 1. 2}ND texture fibres, steels with a dominating {0. 0. 1}ND texture fibre, and steels with close-to-random textures; {. hkl}ND representing grain orientations with {. hkl} planes parallel to the steel rolling plane. The results show that strong {1. 1. 1}ND fibre textures produced by warm-rolling schedules significantly increase HIC-resistance of pipeline steels, whereas {0. 0. 1}ND and close-to-random textures make steels HIC-prone. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Risers are flexible multilayered pipes formed by an inner flexible metal structure surrounded by polymer layers and spiral wound steel ligaments, also known as armor wires. Since these risers are used to link subsea pipelines to floating oil and gas production installations, and their failure could produce catastrophic consequences, some methods have been proposed to monitor the armor integrity. However, until now there is no practical method that allows the automatic non-destructive detection of individual armor wire rupture. In this work we show a method using magnetic Barkhausen noise that has shown high efficiency in the detection of armor wire rupture. The results are examined under the cyclic and static load conditions of the riser. This work also analyzes the theory behind the singular dependence of the magnetic Barkhausen noise on the applied tension in riser armor wires. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper presents the development of a portable probe for detecting cracks in steel plates. The probe consists of a magnet and a giant magneto-resistance (GMR) sensor. The magnet provides a radial magnetization at the surface of the steel plate. The GMR sensor detects the tangential component of the magnetic flux leakage due to a crack in the steel plate. Two steel plates were inspected with six cracks of depths: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm, and widths of 0.25 and 0.5 mm, respectively. The cracks were scanned with the GMR sensitivity axis at 90°, 80°, 70°, 60° and 50°. It is demonstrated that the output voltage of the GMR sensor is sensitive to the orientation of the crack. © 2013 IEEE.

A new type of experiment is performed using a closed magnetic circuit configuration in order to study the influence of the magnetic field on pitting corrosion in low carbon pipeline steel. The statistical assessment of the pitting corrosion data shows that the magnetic field in the material under test reduces the extreme pit depths and also the average depth of the pit population. It is proposed that reduction in pit depth under the influence of remanent magnetization can be explained based on the behavior of the paramagnetic corrosion products under the influence of the magnetic field gradient produced inside pits. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

This work proposes a method to study multiple sources in the magnetic Barkhausen noise signal. The method is termed source mapping analysis and is based on the generation of a map of signals using a set of elementary sources. The evolution of Barkhausen noise signals as a function of two microstructural features, i.e. carbon content and level of plastic deformation, is studied by placing the input signal on the map. The position of the magnetic Barkhausen noise signal in the map follows a trajectory depending on these microstructural features, which could be used to simultaneously estimate their values. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper presents a method for rapid quantification of long artificial cracks using a GMR-based eddy current sensor. The quantification is achieved simultaneously through a proposed phenomenological relationship between the cracks dimension and two parameters extracted from the GMR output signal. The results show that the proposed method is valid and advantageous when a quick and reliable estimation of the cracks dimension is necessary. A criterion taking into consideration the filling factor of the excitation coil is proposed in order to improve the systems sensitivity. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
