Zamia furfuracea L. f. is endemic cycad species from Veracruz, Mexico. The species is dioecious cycad, which is endangered. There is no report about the existence of a sexual dimorphism in this species, so it is not possible to perform adequate gender identification in early stages or when there is no strobili. A total of nine morphological variables were evaluated in 31 male and 26 female plants of a natural population of Veracruz to determine differences related to the gender of Z. furfuracea. Number of pairs of leaflets, leaf width, average width of the leaflet and diameter of the petiole were significantly different between genders (P = 0.043, P = 0.032, P = 0.041 and P = 0.002, respectively). These characteristics may form morphometric markers to determine with greater certainty the gender ratio in this species. © 2013 Hogrefe Publishing. Source

This study determined the pathogenic and isozymic variations of Fusarium spp. isolates associated with the stem and root rotting of a vanilla cultivar in the Totonacapan region, Veracruz, Mexico. Pathogenicity patterns and esterase isozymes profiles of the isolates evaluated revealed that not only morphological and pathogenic variability exists, but also a high level of biochemical variability within the fungi responsible for stem rotting in Vanilla planifolia Jacks. ex Andrews. The production of some esterases (band Rf = 0.75) appears to be associated with the pathogenicity of the fungi, since their presence was not detected in the isolates that were non pathogenic to the crop. This biochemical marker might be a fast, reliable and inexpensive alternative, in relation with other well established molecular technologies, to assess the pathogenicity of Fusarium spp. in V. planifolia, as well as other species or races of this genus that cause stem and root rotting in the crop. Macrosporin, a bioactive metabolite produced by a plant-pathogenic fungus Stemphylium lycopersici, was found to be a non-host selective toxin which plays a part in leaf necrosis, a disease caused by this fungus. Here, we discuss the role of this metabolite in necrotic spots, through the direct inoculation of the midribs of the leaves of a natural host, as well as its ability to generate active oxygen species, through the process of photosensitizing oxygen. © 2011 Phytochemical Society of Europe. An unusual food plant for Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) in Mexico. Larvae of Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus, 1758) were discovered on floral cones of Magnolia schiedeana (Schltdl, 1864) near the natural reserve of La Martinica, Veracruz, México. Magnolia represents an unusual host for this moth species, which is known throughout the world as the "codling moth", a serious pest of fruits of Rosaceae, especially apples. The larvae were identified using taxonomic keys, and identification was corroborated using molecular markers. Further sampling resulted in no additional larvae, hence, the observation was probably that of an ovipositional error by the female, and M. schiedeana is not at risk of attack by this important moth pest.
