Two novel labdane diterpenoids, 15ξ-methoxy-labdan-8(17),11(E),13(14)- trien-15,16-olide (1) and 12(S)-hydroxy-15ξ-methoxy-labdan-8(17),13(14)-dien- 15,16-olide (2) were isolated from the rhizomes of Aframomum sceptrum K. Schum (Zingiberaceae). Their structures were established on the basis of their spectroscopic data. Stigmast-4-en-6β-ol-3-one and caryophylene oxide were also obtained. In vitro trypanocidal and leishmanicidal activities of labdanes 1 and 2 were evaluated. Compound 2 exhibited activity similar to that of reference drugs against Leishmania donovani. © 2011 Phytochemical Society of Europe. Source

The essential oil from the rhizomes of Aframomum sceptrum (Zingiberaceae) was analyzed by GC/MS, and its major constituents were found to be β-pinene (12.7%), caryophyllene oxide (10.0%), and cyperene (6.0%). The oil was also evaluated for antimicrobial activities, in comparison with β-pinene, caryophyllene oxide, and the leaf essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia (Myrtaceae). The A. sceptrum essential oil exhibited bacteriostatic activity against the Gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and S. aureus, but not against Gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, it showed mild fungicidal activity against Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigates, and remarkable antiprotozoal activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei (MLC of 1.51 μl/ml) and Trichomonas vaginalis (IC50 of 0.12±0.02 and MLC of 1.72 μl/ml). The chemical composition of the essential oil of the leaves of Aframomum exscapum (Sims) Hepper collected from three localities of south-east of Côte d'Ivoire (Assouba, Nianda and Malamalassou) was investigated. The oil obtained by hydrodistillation using Clevenger apparatus were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Twenty three components were identified, 1,8-cineole (53.8 - 61.7 %) was the major constituent of oil obtained from Malamalassou and Nianda, while the combination of 1,8-cineole (52.9 %) and (E)-nerolidol (16.1 %) characterized the oil from Assouba. © 2011, Har Krishan Bhalla & Sons.
