Carbon based fillers like carbon fibers and graphite are commonly used for tribological applications. Carbon fibers dissipate thermal energy, increase load capacity and reduce wear. The crystal structure of graphite is beneficial for the sliding behaviour. The single graphite layers slip off and reduce the friction coefficient in this way. CNTs combine all properties of carbon based fillers. The aim of this study is to characterize the tribological behavior of steel-PTFE composite bearings with CNTs employed as filler material in PTFE. The trials are carried out with a plate-on-ring and rotation test bench with different sliding speeds and loads. PTFE-based composite plain bearings with CNTs as fillers show high wear resistance and offer potential e.g. for bearings positions in shock absorbers or injection pumps. Due to synergetic effects with further fillers in combination with CNTs it is even possible to improve the performance. Source

PEEK based composite bushings are an established material system for die-sel injection pumps. To develop further applications a better understanding of the tribological characteristics of this new material is needed. On a bearing test rig for lubricated applications PEEK-based composite bushings were tested to analyze their tribological properties, load capacity and seizure behavior. As a comparison PVDF-based composite bushings were investigated. The PVDF-based materials exhibit excellent tribological properties and high load ability in a moderate temperature range. Polymer composite bushings based on PEEK show a superior wear characteristic and therefore are especially suitable for start stop applications. A further advantage is their elevated continuous use temperature and high dynamic load ability under the conditions tested. Source
