Research data on plasma electrolytic hardening of steels in aqueous solutions are analysed with an emphasis on the features of the hardened layer formation and the processing conditions, as well as on electrolyte compositions providing new technological opportunities. The influence of the treatment regimes on the temperature and heating rate of cylindrical samples are described. The methods of hardening under different hydrodynamic conditions using direct current and pulsed current, including thermal cycling, are considered. Examples of practical applications of plasma electrolytic hardening of steels are presented. © 2016, Allerton Press, Inc.

This model may be used in design of the short-fiber ribbon preparation for cleaning and thinning, and also for transporting and rolling process design of the different multi-layer composite materials.

Plasma electrolytic processes used for treatment of materials are based on their heating in a vapor-gaseous medium. This work is concerned with the thermal models for calculation of the steady-state temperature of anode heating, which are based on solution of the heat conduction equation in a continuous and stable vapor-gas envelope (VGE). These models provide the decreasing current-voltage (CVC) and the increasing temperature-voltage (TVC) characteristics of anode heating, which are qualitatively agreed with experimental data in the voltage region corresponding to stationary heating up to 400-1000 °C. The analysis of assumptions accepted in these models has shown that the agreement between calculated and experimental data can be improved by taking into account the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity coefficient of vapor. This agreement remains unchanged when taking into account the role of the space charge in the envelope. Mean estimates of a value of effective electrical conductivity of the vapor envelope (2.13 × 10 -3 S/m) and the mobility of ions in the envelope (1.6 × 10 -4 m 2/(Vs)) with the experimental data for aqueous solutions of ammonium nitrate in the concentration ranging from 1 to 3 mol/l have been obtained. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, we investigate the transport of carbon from electrolyte containing ammonia chloride and glycerol in low carbon steel treated withthe use of an anode plasma electrolytic carburizing (PEC) process. Glycerol is established to oxidise and to evaporate in vapour-gas envelope (VGE) with the products of its decomposition, where they are thermally decomposed at the higher temperature. Formed alcohols, aldehydes and acetone are adsorbed on the anode surface and subjected to electro-oxidation. Subsequent products are low-molecular hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide which dissociate to form the active atomic carbon. Carbon diffusion is shown to be slowed down by the formed oxide layer; its thickness depends on the electrolyte composition determining the rate of the oxidation and anode dissolution processes. Estimation of the effective carbon diffusivity in the compound layer, which reached 12.9·10-8cm2/s was carried out. The resulting diffusion layers are characterized by a high microhardness (up to700HV). Surface roughness of the sample is reduced after the anode treatment from Ra=0.42μm for an untreated surface to 0.07-0.08μm. Increasing of the ammonia chloride concentration and decreasing of the glycerol one promote the decrease of the surface roughness. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

This scientific review is devoted to the mechanism of the anode heating in aqueous electrolytes and its application for the heat and thermochemical treatment of steels and titanium alloys. The heating and electrochemical peculiarities of the anode hardening are considered, the technological possibilities for improving the operational properties using nitrohardening, carbonizing, or oxidation are described. The existence of two forms of unipolar gas-breakdown discharge that depend on the pulse-repetition frequency and the polarity of high-voltage pulses is experimentally revealed. These two forms differ in their intensities, the distribution of luminescence on the discharge length, and their volt-ampere characteristics. The transition from one discharge form to another proceeds in a narrow frequency range and is caused by the breakdown of the near-electrode layer in some critical field under the inclusion of ion-electron emission process. The transition frequency increases with the growth of the gas pressure and a decrease of the pulse amplitude. The development of discharge instability and the hysteresis of its parameters are observed in the transition area. © 2013 Allerton Press, Inc.
