Korean Construction Specifications and Design Standards (CSDS) include redundant or conflicting guidelines due to the absence of universal code system and the multiple administrative associations. In addition, compared to a three-year revision period of developed countries, Korean CSDS are revised every six years. Since the long revision period reduces the competitiveness in international construction markets, standardized code system is urgently required. In this study, management status of Korean CSDS is investigated and the development direction of code system for CSDS is suggested. Code System is developed based on visibility and expandability, and the code system for twenty-one design standards and twenty-nine construction specifications is suggested. The code system unifies CSDS at the major level and consists of 768 unit-codes. Based on the developed code system, redundancies and conflicts between CSDS will be resolved, and effective enactment and revision of CSDS will be implemented. © 2015 Korean Society of Civil Engineers and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
