The Pérez Art Museum Miami currently under construction in Miami, Florida is designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The vertical glass facades have been designed in close collaboration between seele and Knippers Helbig, fabricated and installed by seele. Miami is well known to be located in a region with high wind loads and risk of hurricanes, requiring compliance to demanding hurricane resistant specifications for the glass façades. Up until now, the large glass units that are planned - up to approx. 5.20 m high and 2.30 m wide - have not been used in this hurricane prone region. All the elements of the façade must prove their robustness in hurricane tests. The panes of glass are fixed to stainless steel rails cast into the ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) mullions. The joint is either concealed by narrow pressure plates or a toggle-system is used to fix the glass panels to the mullions. Owing to the threat of hurricanes, each pane consists of two double-glazing units with a reinforcing interlayer in between. Here, a demanding owner and even more demanding architects, with the help of seele and Knippers Helbig, are pushing material limits. © 2013 Ernst & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG.

The use of lightweight and corrosion-resistant construction materials such as pultruded glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles in bridges has been increasing in recent years. Even though the use of detachable connections with mechanical fasteners is the most reliable and controlled technique for joining GFRP structures, there is a lack of information on the load-bearing capacity of connections in which the bolts are subjected to tension loads. The results from a series of tests aimed at investigating the load-bearing behaviour of different GFRP connection types where bending or pull-out failure may occur are summarised in this paper. The tests were conducted using standard stainless steel bolts and nuts. Load resistance models are proposed based on the experimental investigations. Furthermore, a partial safety factor is determined using the statistical methods given in EN 1990. Finally, an application of mechanically fastened connections is shown for a GFRP pedestrian bridge erected near Schwerin, Germany.

The Thematic Pavilion "One Ocean", designed by SOMA Architecture, Vienna, is a major and permanent building for the Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea. The façade facing the expo area and the main entrance is conducted as kinetic media façade symbolizing the gills of a fish. The façade therefore illustrates the theme of the Expo "The living ocean and coast" very well. Development of the kinetic media façade was inspired by flexible deformation principles found in plant movements. The project is a role model for a novel application of glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP) for deployable structures as well as for advanced biomimetic research and design. © 2013 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. This paper presents a consistent design concept for bolted connections of standardized GFRP-profiles. All test specimens have been taken either from pultruded flat-profiles or the webs of standard pultrusion I or Uprofiles from Fiberline Composites A/S. At first the orthotropic material properties of the laminates were determined by experimental tests, including short term and long term properties as well as influence of temperature and media. Experimental results have been confirmed by numerical simulations; taking the complex limit state conditions into account introducing the fracture criteria of Puck. Afterwards relevant functions to determine resistances have been developed for different limit state conditions. To obtain characteristic values, these functions have been calibrated according to the reliability requirements of EN 1990. Using simplified engineering models for the practical design of bolted connections therefore a complete and consistent design concept is provided. © Tsinghua University Press, Beijing and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.
