The review compiles the recent results in the field of application of polymers mainly on the basis of methyl-methacrylate in prosthetic dentistry. The paper covers the main achievements of polymer preparations and modifications with improved perfomances, physico-chemical and mechanical properties important for the dental application. Furthermore, the influence of polymerization processes on polymer properties, content and diffusion of residual monomer and other low molecular components in the oral cavity is described. Specific attention is given to the new methods for the structural analysis of acrylate polymers in order to understand the structure/properties relationship with a perspective of the prolonged use of dental supstitutes in the oral cavity.

This paper reviews the recent results in the field of acrylate polymers degradation with emphasis on the poly(methyl methacrylate) used in the prosthetic dentistry. It describes the degradation procesess including biodegradation, thermal degradation, degradation induced by irradiation and mechanically induced changes in dental polymers during their application. The paper considers the influence of degradation on the structural changes of polymers, molecular mass and release of low molecular degradation by-products in the oral cavity. As a result of degradation polymer properties are altered, while the low molecular substances may affect the patient's health. There is also discussion about the latest findings of structural changes of methacrylate denture base materials induced by very low doses of γ-irradiation performed on the patients exposed to radiotherapy.
