High purity capsaicin is in great demand in the fields of medicine and food. The multi-element valued model is used to evaluate four capsaicin extraction technologies including solvent extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, coupled solvent-supercritical extraction and coupled solvent-ion exchange route. The results confirm that coupled solvent-ion exchange route is the optimal technological process, preceding other routes obviously. Experimental study on the coupled solvent-ion exchange route shows that the optimum parameters for capsaicin extraction are: initial concentration 331.4 mg·L-1, flow rate 18.8 ml·min-1, pH 5.0, and room temperature. The column purification parameters such as the solution concentration and velocity with its effects are also obtained, and the capsaicin purity of final production reaches 98.42%. © All Rights Reserved. In addition to its challenging structural features, alstonerine, as a representative member of the macroline family of alkaloids, has been reported to exhibit cytotoxic activity against two human lung cancer cell lines, so it has been the subject of a number of synthetic studies. Several strategies have been devised to access this structural motif including a sequential Pictet-Spengler reaction and Dieckmann condensation, ring-closing metathesis, phosphine-catalyzed [4+2] annulation/Friedel-Crafts cyclization, aza-Diels-Alder/ intramolecular Heck reaction, Pauson-Khand reaction. In this paper, the synthetic methods are reviewed according to the key building reactions of the ring structures. Most routes to alstonerine are through complicated steps. Hence, the simple and convenient methods are still needed to further study. Source

Neuroligin-4 (NL4), encoded by the NLGN4 gene on the X chromosome, is a neuronal-specific brain membrane protein which plays an important role in the formation of functional presynaptic elements and axon specialization. The genetic variants of NLGN4 affect the biological function of NL4, resulting in the manifestation of different psychiatric disorders. The present study investigates the influence of these genetic variants on cognitive performance. The cognitive abilities of 351 subjects were evaluated using the Chinese Wechsler Intelligence Scale Children. The haplotypes were assigned with the PHASE program. The ANOVA method was applied to investigate the relationship between single SNP, the identified target haplotypes and cognitive performance in a random sample. We observed that the XC allele of rs5916271 and XA allele of the re6638575 carriers had significantly higher cognitive ability performances than the noncarrier boys (p < 0.05). The target haplotype composed of 2 allele (XCA+) carriers also displayed a higher cognitive performance than that of the noncarriers boys. The genetic polymorphism of NLGN4 also had a significant effect on the boys' cognitive ability and other intelligence factors. Future research will involve determining the relationship between NLGN4 and personal cognitive ability. © 2010 S. Karger AG, Basel. Source

A series of solid base catalysts were prepared for the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) using CO2 and CH3OH. These catalysts were prepared via an iso-volumic impregnation method using KOH as an active component which was supported by silica gel, magnesium oxide, activated carbon and alumina respectively. The experimental results show that the catalytic activity of the activated carbon supported KOH has the best performance. The catalysts were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the experimental results show that the activated carbon with large specific surface area tends to be a good carrier. After high temperature calcination, KOH decomposes into K2O crystal which improves its catalytic activation. K2O disperses well on the surface and inner wall of the carriers. The effects of KOH loading amount, additive composition, reaction temperature and pressure were investigated and the reaction process was optimized. The yield of DMC is 8.5% under the optimum conditions, which is superior to the existing results of supercritical heterogeneous catalysis of DMC synthesis reported in the literature. ©, 2015, Zhejiang University.
