In this paper, according to the thixotropic behavior of tailings paste in flowing process, which was classified as shear failure and stand recovery. Some indexes such as thixotropic amount Δτ, thixotropic time te, structure failure coefficient λ and structure recovery coefficient ξ were put forward for quantitatively describing thixotropic process. By constant shear rate rheological experiment under various conditions, the influences of shear rate, paste concentrations, the addition of flocculent and standing time for thixotropic characteristics of tailings paste were studied. The results showed that: shear rate, paste concentrations and the addition of flocculent had various degrees positive effects; the higher the concentrations of tailings paste, the faster the speed of structure recovery in standing conditions. In the end, the experiment phenomena were explained, and their respective industrial interest were discussed.
