Chemical pesticide plays an important role in ensuring the crop yield. However, when chemical pesticides killed the pests and other harmful organisms, the agricultural products and environment were also polluted. The pollution ways of chemical pesticides on atmosphere, water, soil and crops were summarized in this paper. Taking the vegetables production in winter in China and Hainan province as example, the consumption situations of chemical pesticides have been analyzed. The consumption content of chemical pesticide showed an increased trend year by year in China. The consumption content of chemical pesticide showed first an increase, then a decrease and then an increased trend in Hainan province. The reasonable use of pesticide is the key to control environmental pollution and the safe production of vegetables. The control strategies of chemical pesticide pollution were summarized, which could provide a reference for the rational use of chemical pesticide and environment protection. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

The main components of sambong (Blumea balsamifera) are listed in this article. The whole plant and its crude extracts, as well as its isolated constituents, display numerous biological activities, such as antitumor, hepatoprotective, superoxide radical scavenging, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammation, anti-plasmodial, anti- Tyrosinase, platelet aggregation, enhancing percutaneous penetration, wound healing, anti-obesity, along with disease and insect resistant activities. Although many experimental and biological studies have been carried out, some traditional uses such as rheumatism healing still need to be verified by scientific pharmacological studies, and further studies including phytochemical standardization and bioactivity authentication would be beneficial.

Aechmea fasciata belongs to the Bromeliaceae. In cultivation of bromeliads, flower-induction by ethylene and the derivative has been one item of conventional technology. Flower-induction of bromeliads by ethylene is age-dependent: adult plants bloom but juvenile plants not. To study age-dependent flower transition induced by ethylene in bromeliads, we treated juvenile and adult plants with ethrel, then constructed two transcriptomes using short read sequencing technology (Illumina). 52,396,972 sequencing raw reads totaling 4. 72 Gbp of the juvenile plant sample and 52,560,902 sequencing raw reads totaling 4. 73 Gbp of the adult plant sample were assembled de novo into 71,445 unique sequences (i. e. All-Unigene) with a mean length of 461 bp and a total assembly size of 47. 9 Mbp. Of all, 35,483 unigenes had significant hits with sequences in the Nr database, 24,409 showed significant similarities to known proteins in the Swiss-Prot database. 13,585 and 18,747 unigenes had significant similarity to existing sequences in the Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) and cluster of orthologous group (COG) databases, respectively. Between two transcriptomes, we found 10,036 differentially expressed genes. Among them, we identified and analyzed 60 gene fragments related to ethylene signaling pathway and flowering process. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate into effects of molybdenum (Mo) on the secondary metabolic process of glycyrrhizic acid (GA). One-year-old seedlings were grown in pots with washed vermiculite and sand. Hoagland nutrition solution was irrigated with four concentrations: 0, 0.52, 5.2 and 10.4mgL-1. The accumulations of GA and its biosynthetic precursors (β-amyrin and squalene) and then expression of the key synthase (β-amyrin synthase, β-AS) were studied on 35, 70 and 105d. In the early stage, that was on the 35 and 70d, the contents of squalene and GA, and the expression of β-AS gene under 0.52 and 5.2mgL-1 Mo treatments were significantly higher than that under 0 and 10.4mgL-1 Mo. There was a contrary result of β-amyrin. However, the content of squalene under 0mgL-1 Mo was the highest on 105d. Thus, it suggested an appropriate concentration of Mo could promote the accumulation of GA, by affecting the biosynthetic process of GA at a certain time. Practically, the time and amount of application of Mo on Glycyrrhiza uralensis should be the noted. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Blumea balsamifera oil (BBO) is a main extract obtained from Blumea balsamifera (L.) DC (Ainaxiang) leaves, which are widely used as a traditional medicine by the Miao and Li Nations to promote skin trauma or burn injury healing. This study was initiated to investigate the healing efficacy in deep second-degree burn model in rats. The rats were treated by BBO for 21 consecutive days. The rate of healing, scabs dropped time and re-epithelialization time were observed every three days for 21 days after burn injury. The samples were collected from different treated rats by sacrificing the animals on the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th, 14th, and 21st day post-burn creation. Then, the water content of burn tissue was measured. Plasma interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were evaluated, and the tissue expressions of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) were determined along with skin histopathology. The results showed that the water content of tissue was significantly reduced, the scabs dropped time shortened, and healing accelerated after treatment with BBO in the burn injury rats. Furthermore, the expressions of growth factors were significantly increased in the tissue; however, the levels of inflammatory factors on plasma decreased. This study confirms the efficacy of BBO consumption on burn injuries.
