Shingled magnetic recording (SMR) scheme is one of the promising techniques for high density magnetic recording. This paper presents a study of the sensitivity of the write field quality on the key design parameters of a perpendicular write head with wrap-around shield for SMR schemes. In the evaluation of the write head performance, the angle dependence of the switching field is considered to account for the characteristics of the perpendicular media. The field gradients of the head fields are examined at various critical locations of the write contour including the pole corner and the track edges. The dependence of the write performance on the variations of design parameters is investigated using a hybrid approach based on response surface methodology (RSM) and Taguchi's orthogonal arrays.
