In this study, the phosphorylated derivative of low-molecular-weight polysaccharide from Enteromorpha linza was prepared. And then the antioxidant activities of all the samples were investigated including scavenging effects of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals and reducing power. The results of chemical composition, FT-IR spectrum and DSC analysis showed the modifications of polysaccharide were successful. And moreover, the phosphorylated derivative showed excellent antioxidant activity in these three assays, so this derivative needs to be attention in further. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Potassium diformate (KDF) has been regarded as an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters for animals. This paper delineates a 100% atom economical process for the preparation of KDF from formic acid and potassium formate. Parametric optimization of the synthesis was conducted with respect to reaction time, reaction temperature, and molar ratio of the reactants by employing orthogonal design of experiment method. The results manifested a molar ratio of HCOOH to HCOOK of 1.3, reaction temperature of 65 °C, and reaction time of 30 min as the optimal conditions with a KDF product yield of 94.0%. Efforts were also made to explore the antimold performance of KDF on animal feed using the plate count method. Compared with sodium diacetate (SDA), the widely used mold inhibitor, KDF exhibited even better antimold performance for animal feed. To our knowledge, this work first proved the applicability of KDF as a mold inhibitor for animal feed. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

In this paper we studied the adsorption and desorption behavior of SO2 by the dead Bacillus licheniformis R08 biomass. The effects of water vapor, temperature and O2 on the removal of SO2 by the biomass were studied. FTIR and XPS were used to characterize the mechanism of the SO2 adsorption on the biomass. The experimental results showed that water vapor and temperature deeply influenced the adsorption of SO2 by the biomass. However, O2 cannot oxidize SO2 to SO3 on the biomass. FTIR and XPS results showed that oxygenous and nitrogenous functional groups on the cell walls of biomass may be related to the SO2 adsorption and three sulfur species were formed on the biomass in adsorption process. In the desorption process, weakly adsorbed SO2 could be desorbed by increasing temperature and the biomass can be reused for 10 cycles. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
