Huge heat loss in producing deep water oil and gas well, steam injection well, geothermal well and wells drilled in permafrost bring a serious consequence to the development of an oilfield. This paper introduces the study and application of water base heat insulating packer fluid, including shear-thing fluid, delayed cross-linking fluid and self-crosslinking fluid. Polyhydric alcohols and soluble inorganic salts can reduce the coefficient of thermal conductivity, increase the density and improve the thermal stability of these three packer fluids. Water and alcohol used in super absorbent resin solidifying packer fluid can further reduce heat loss by free convection. Retarders used in delayed crosslinking packer fluid can delay the crosslinking of viscosifiers, making it easy for the packer fluid to be pumped down the hole. Self-crosslinking of two viscosifiers takes place at a temperature in the annular space, severely increasing the viscosity of the packer fluid and further weakening free convection. In the conclusion, the paper points out the importance of developing water base heat-insulating packer fluid, and suggests that attention should be paid to the study of shear-thinning fluid containing super absorbent resin and crosslinking fluid containing retarders.
