The generation principle of electronic arc-suppression coil transient (EACT) and its distribution in fault and sound lines are analyzed in this paper. Then the effect on reliability of fault line selection is analyzed on the basic of the analysis of EACT. It is seen that if the fault resistance is low, the EACT is benefit for fault line selection. And if the fault resistance is large, it will be bad for selection. For polarity comparison methods, it will affect the reliability of fault line selection. Finally, the effects of EACT on fault line selection based on transient signals are verified by simulations. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper introduces the basis knowledge about partial discharge of XLPE cables, the idea that precise partial discharge location can be achieved by traveling waves fault location technology is proposed, then some key issues are discussed in this paper, that is the interference between consecutive partial discharges is analyzed, the measurability of partial discharges voltage is proved, and the effective signal acquisition for traveling waves of partial discharge is solved. Finally, the analyzed conclusions are verified by the simulation on partial discharge electrical model. © 2011 IEEE.

The transient process and the transient current distribution of small-current grounding fault are analyzed and the difficulties of its location by DA(Distribution Automation) system are discussed. The principles and features of transient reactive power direction location method and transient grounding fault current similarity location method are introduced and a hybrid method is proposed, which applies the former method to estimate roughly the fault section and the latter to confirm exactly the fault location. The necessity of integrating the faulty line selector into DA system is explained and its location flowchart is given. The results of static simulation and field operation show that, the proposed fault location function of DA system has high success rate, which can effectively distinguish the disturbances from the faults.

Thorough analysis to the principle of harmonic-based earth fault protection(identification to the line with a single phase to earth fault) in non-solidly earthed network is made to find that the main factor affecting the reliability of harmonics-based protections is the amplitude of pre-fault harmonic voltage at the fault point. The characteristics of non-linear load as a harmonic source and the distribution of harmonic voltage and current produced by non-linear load are analyzed. It is discovered that the reliability of harmonic-based protection depends on the position of a fault point very much when the stability fault occurred in the network only including non-linear load harmonic source. The closer to the non-linear load the fault is, the higher the reliability is. It is also found that the protection has better reliability when fault is on the phase with larger harmonic current amplitude when the non-linear load has significant imbalance. The analysis results are proved by digital simulation.

Based on fault generated travelling waves, a fault location model suitable for direct feeding traction network with return line is proposed. The characteristics of voltage and current travelling waves due to various fault types such as the fault between catenaries and earth or rail, the faults between catenaries and return line as well as the propagation characteristics of travelling waves along traction lines with different structures are analyzed. Analysis results, which are verified by both simulation and field tests, show that various types of faults can generate travelling wave signals suitable for fault location, however anchor section, railway segmented line, return lines with unequal lengths and so on delay the rising velocity of travelling wave head, thus such a delay makes the fault location based on fault generated travelling waves more difficult.
