There has been a growing demand on aqueous-type adhesives due to environmental concerns for solvent-type adhesives. However, low molecular weight emulsifiers remaining after polymerization can be transferred to the adhesive coating surface lowering water-resistance and adhesive strength of adhesives for emulsion polymerized aqueous-type adhesives. To overcome these disadvantages, we used alkali-soluble resin (ASR), which had a lower migration rate due to large molecular structure of ASR to polymerize 2-EHA, n-BA, MMA and AAc as monomers to make a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA). We measured the change of peel strength, initial tack and holding power of PSA according to aging time at constant temperature/humidity (85 °C/85%) conditions. We found almost no change in the time variation of the above physical properties of PSA prepared with ASR. We also confirmed that 15 times larger average particle size and 2.8 times higher molecular weight for the PSA made with ASR than the one made with low molecular weight emulsifiers. © 2016 The Polymer Society of Korea. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized with a mixture of H2SO4:HNO3(3:1 v/ v). After oxidation, oxidized MWCNTs were treated with thionyl chloride (SOCl2) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) in sequence at room temperature to introduce hydroxy 1 groups on the surface of MWCNTs. The prepared MWCNT-OH was silanized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane (MPTMS), to introduce polymerizable methacrylate groups to make MWCNT-MPTMS. MWCNT-MPTMS was used for the emulsion polymerization of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA), n- bulyl acrylate (m-BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and acrylic acid (AAc) as monomers to prepare electrically conductive acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive (EPSA). We found increase of Tg, viscosity, peel strength and tack and decrease of sheet resistivity with increase of MWCNT-MPTMS contents in EPSA from 0 to 0.5 wt%. © 2015 The Polymer Society of Korea. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. After oxidation, oxidized MWCNTs were treated with thionyl chloride (SOC12) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) in sequence at room temperature to introduce hydroxyl groups on the surface of MWCNTs. The prepared MWCNT-OH was silanized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane (MPTMS) to make MWCNT-MPTMS. The MWCNT-MPTMS was used as fillers in emulsion polymerization to make MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA composite particles with 3 kinds of emulsifiers, hexadecyltrimethylammoniurnbromide (CTAB) as a cationic, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as an anionic and polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-114) as a nonionic emulsifier. Morphologies of composite emulsions were confirmed by a particle size analyzer (PSA) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Morphologies of emulsion polymerized MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA with SDBS showed more uniform particle size distribution compared to those of other two emulsifiers used emulsions. MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA showed 3.4 °C higher Tg compared to pristine MWCNT/PMMA due to covalent bond formation at interface of MWCNT-MPTMS and PMMA. © 2015 The Polymer Society of Korea.
