In this paper, the coupled problem of planar acoustic wave propagation through the double-layer composite plate containing the second layer from damping material with high logarithmic decrement is examined. Aerohydrodynamic interaction between plate and external acoustic environment is defined by three-dimensional wave equations, whilst mechanical behaviour of double-layered plate is examined with model based on classical Kirchhoff-Love's hypothesis. Exact analytical solutions are given for plates with simply supported edges. On the basis of given solutions, parameters for second layer, which lead substantially damping of plate vibrations are found in the case of acoustic loading at resonant modes. © 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd. In the present study we show how fast the fluid dynamics change when changing the laser power for different feed rates during laser metal welding. By the use of two high-speed cameras and a data acquisition system we conclude how fast we have to image the process to measure the fluid dynamics with a very high certainty. Our experiments show that not all process features which can be measured during laser welding do represent the process behavior similarly well. Despite the good visibility of the vapor plume the monitoring of its movement is less suitable as an input signal for a closed-loop control. The features measured inside the keyhole show a good correlation with changes of process parameters. Due to its low noise, the area of the keyhole opening is well suited as an input signal for a closed-loop control of the process. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Source

The hardening of 4X5MΦC die steel by a powerful fiber laser is considered. It is found that the hardness of the surface layer after laser treatment is 62–64 HRC and the depth of the hardened layer is 1 mm. Theoretical-experimental method is proposed in this paper for determining the logarithmic decrement of vibrations based on the measurement of tip amplitude of the flat cantilever test samples during their damped vibrations at first resonance mode. Significant effect of external aerodynamic forces on logarithmic decrement is observed. Extensive theoretical and experimental studies were performed on the aerodynamic component of damping of oscillated flat strip plates. For the assessment of its contribution to overall damping of test samples during their free vibrations, large number of numerical experiments were carried out on two dimensional flow dynamics around the plate, in the light of which an approximated empirical formula is found. Present study is also covering the method to identify the elastic properties and amplitude dependencies of logarithmic decrement on deformation in accordance with the data of physical experiments performed with various series of test samples. © 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd. The authors suggest a general concept for quantitative inspection of complex systems (when the “best fit” model is absent) data in one unified scheme with the help of the sequence of ranged amplitudes (SRA). Moreover, the “up” and “down” branches of SRA distribution can replace a conventional histogram (having uncontrollable errors) and can be expressed in terms of the fitting parameters that are associated with a combination of power-law functions. As an example of a complex system we considered an analog-to-digital convertor having 16 channels. For four compared different operating modes of this device the calculated SRAs have different behavior and the significant quantitative parameters found enable to differentiate all these regimes from each other. We hope that this new approach will find a proper place in analysis of different complex systems and in different engineering applications, where the urgent necessity in quantitative comparison of complex systems without model exists. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
